| In the Realspace Raid section you will find a lot of battle reports with illustrations. Illustrations lead to better reports and more importantly lets you, the author get better feedback. This is a simple tutorial that should tell you everything you need to know to churn out good quality diagrams for your battle reports. Downloading Battle ChroniclerBattle Chroniclers is a free and easy to use software designed for making battle reports. Unfortunaly it's only available for windows (sorry Mac and Linux users). You can download it for free from this site. The BasicsWhen you start the program the following window should appear: To start a new project simply click on File -> New. The following window should appear: This window lets you set all configure all the game parameters: board size, colour, army names, starting positions, who goes first etc. Don't worry if you make a mistake here as it can still be changed later. To define an army click Define. The following window should appear: This window lets you define an army, create units, determine base shapes and size, etc. Once you are done creating your army, you can then click OK. You can the proceed to define your opponents army. There is also an option to import armies from other battle chronicler files. Once you are done with setting up the game details, click OK. You should see something similar to the window bellow: This is the basic interface window, first you can set up terrain using the lists on the left (1). The turn bar (2) can be used to control by clicking the arrows. You can select terrain on the map by clicking on it, it will be highlighted by a box (4), you can then use the icons on the top bar (3) to do various functions like rotating terrain etc. Once you are done setting up terrain, click on the right turn arrow on the turn bar(2) to move to deployment. You should see something similar to the window bellow: You can select which army you want to deploy by selecting one of the team tabs (1) on the left. You can then deploy unit by clicking on the unit bar (2) and then clicking where you want to deploy them on the map. Once you are done deploying your units, click on the right turn arrow on the turn bar. You should see something similar to the window bellow: Now that the game has started you can move your units around by dragging and doping them (the white arrows are created automatically). By clicking game(1) in the top left corner you have access to some very useful features: lock and unlock turns, reset selected units, reset current turn etc. In the far right top corner there are three buttons, these let you change the view from big unit boxes to individual models. In individual model view you can move individual models around separately. When you select a unit they appear highlighted(4) and a box will appear on the bottom left. The box(2) lets you control several features of the unit: you can change the colour of its movement arrow red to represent charging, falling back and so on. To remove models that get killed click on the model tab next to the unit box. You should see something similar to the window bellow: To remove a model simple untick the check box next to it. To change the details of the game set up at the beginning of this tutorial click Edit -> Game Details in the top left corner. As show below: When you are done with your report, you can export image files by clicking on File -> Export to Image File. As show below: The following window should appear: Click Export Complete Image. The following window should appear: In this window you can control: the size of the picture, name, format etc. Once you are happy click export and the picture for that turn will be exported to where ever you told it to export to. Now all you need to do is to upload the picture to an image hoster like ImageShack and link them to your report. I advise only using Battle Chronicler for drawing diagrams and using a regular Office/Text editor for writing your report, as Battle Chronicler's text feature are a bit buggy. This completes the tutorial, I hope you found it useful. Any questions please feel free to ask. _________________ Latest Report: BR4: The Repugnant Ramblers Vs Imperial Knights - 1250pts Pragmatic Realspace Raider Series

| Great tutorial. Below is a quote from the Battle Chronicler site and I had this problem-took me a while to find the answer and would like other newbies to know this right off the bat. Save some headaches.
"Heres the problem: you deploy all you units onto the table in the correct place. Then you move to the next turn and all the units disappear and are marked as in the box. This is one of the common things that does catch new users out.
When you change to the next turn Battle Chronicler makes a copy of the previous turn, so each one builds on the previous one. However it won't do this if you have already 'opened' the next turn. The problem comes is if you initially move through all the turns then it will make copies of a blank turn. If you then go back and do things in an earlier turn then these will not be copied into the future turns. Thats why Battle Chronicler puts up a warning dialog if you change turns without moving anything.
If this happens you can "Game->Reset Current Turn" or "Game->Reset Current Turn And Later Turn" options to set the current turn to the same as the previous turn. "

| The great thing about this program is that at the stage of defining armies you can upload Army Buillder files, which basically makes this 3 click operation.
Really handy. _________________ The Dance of Death begins - embraces, caresses, and kisses, The Harlequin loves you as you fall over in pieces!

| Nappen, that's a great first post in the topic, I'm sure it will be helpful for new users. I never experience that to the fullest, but I did notice sometimes things would go missing when ever I started correcting/fiddling with the turns out of sequence. Thanks! - Azdrubael wrote:

Really handy. Wow I never knew that! Thanks for the heads up Azdrubael. That should make things a lot easier for those that use army builder. _________________ Latest Report: BR4: The Repugnant Ramblers Vs Imperial Knights - 1250pts Pragmatic Realspace Raider Series

| The one thing to be aware of when importing from Army Builder is that it will make your transports part of the squad and you will not be able to split them. Also, when you put them on the board will show all of them. For example when you put the venom on the board it will show 6 models. I recommend once you have the army pulled over, deleate the transport from the unit and create a new unit that is your raider or venom. I could not find another way. Doesn't mean there isn't one, but I don't know what it is I don't know if when you export it to image if it changes and splits them out. I will have to check that. UPDATE: Checked it and it exports as a member of the squad. | |

| Thanks for another informative update Nappen, these are just the sort of posts I was hopping for: constructive and helpful to other users who will read this thread. I always did things the simple way in Battle Chronicler, and don't use army builder so I seemed to have managed to avoid most of this. On the other hand you seem to have become a specialist! We might have to so a more advanced guide a later date. _________________ Latest Report: BR4: The Repugnant Ramblers Vs Imperial Knights - 1250pts Pragmatic Realspace Raider Series

| I was having a play around with this last night. Only got as far as setting up the terrain but I wondered if anyone had any images that could be used for some more 40k-ish terrain? Most of the images provided seem to be more fantasy. _________________ You have been weighed, you have been measured, and you have been found wanting. In what world could you possibly beat me? | |

I know you can create your own terrain pieces ( Component Creation Tutorial), but I have yet to find a 40k repository. If anyone does please let us know. Otherwise what we could do is ask one of the many great painters on the forum to take pictures of some of their terrain. They could then send the pictures to me and I could create our own 40k repository. _________________ Latest Report: BR4: The Repugnant Ramblers Vs Imperial Knights - 1250pts Pragmatic Realspace Raider Series

| I like the sound of that. Perhaps someone with artistic skills could create pictures of some DE scenery that we could use? Would be nice to see a DE bastion for example. _________________ You have been weighed, you have been measured, and you have been found wanting. In what world could you possibly beat me? | |

Good news! Gobsmakked has kindly offered to take some pictures of 40k terrain next week, so that I can make them into digital 40k battle chronicler terrain. _________________ Latest Report: BR4: The Repugnant Ramblers Vs Imperial Knights - 1250pts Pragmatic Realspace Raider Series

| Gobsmakked sent me the first of over 50 terrain piece pictures today. Here is a little preview of what they will look like: A big thanks to Gobsmakked for taking pictures of all his awesome terrain. _________________ Latest Report: BR4: The Repugnant Ramblers Vs Imperial Knights - 1250pts Pragmatic Realspace Raider Series

I have finished doing the transparency for all the terrain, at the moment I'm sorting out making the installation program so setting it up is hassle free, should be done over the next week or two. Sorry about the wait been rather busy (who would have thought real life could be such an inconvenience to an archon as powerful as me). _________________ Latest Report: BR4: The Repugnant Ramblers Vs Imperial Knights - 1250pts Pragmatic Realspace Raider Series

| Thanks and can't wait to see it. Perhaps a tutorial on how to creat the terrain for the program...would be too cool to put your own terrain into your own battle reports. | |

| I'm going to make a new tutorial when I have the time, as using a black background is a bad idea. It's a lot easier to use a white background and do a transparency swap. I'll try and get a tutorial done in the next few days. _________________ Latest Report: BR4: The Repugnant Ramblers Vs Imperial Knights - 1250pts Pragmatic Realspace Raider Series

| Appreciate the time and effort your putting into this Mushkilla. I've had a little play about with BC, still getting to grips with it, your tutorial helped a lot. I'm hoping to be able to get some reprts on here when I get used to it. | |

Right now the problem has been setting up a install package (for the 40k bundle). I don't have access to battle chronicler at the moment (on holiday and on my linux laptop). But if you send me the pictures of your terrain with a white background, then I can do the transparency switch for you and email them back to you. Then you can follow the rest of the Terrain tutorial, to add it to your own Battle Chronicler Terrain set. If that would help? Or where you talking about the board background options? _________________ Latest Report: BR4: The Repugnant Ramblers Vs Imperial Knights - 1250pts Pragmatic Realspace Raider Series

| board background options That way you could have things like rivers ect preset. Looking through their site, I don't see that you could do it. I guess the only way would be to make it one giant peice of 6 X 4 terrain and then do everything else on top of it. | |

Figured out the basics though, thanks for this tutorial! I have a little note pad that I use to sketch out the table every game, and do a quick sketch of each turn and take some notes. My opponents often find this quite disconcerting. _________________ Latest Report: BR4: The Repugnant Ramblers Vs Imperial Knights - 1250pts Pragmatic Realspace Raider Series
