PostSubject: Descent miniatures   Descent miniatures I_icon_minitimeWed Nov 13 2013, 05:32

I try to carve out one evening a week as non-40k hobby time.  I've been working on the miniatures from Descent for a while.  I previously did all the heroes and smaller monsters.  All I had left was the big monsters.  I felt especially motivated to finish it off, so it's been all Descent all the time these last two weeks.

Filled some pretty big gaps and primed the lot of 'em.  These miniatures tend to have pretty big seam lines, and the plastic is soft, so it's hard to get it to look good.

One evening I did a pretty ambitious (for me, at least) set of airbrushing.  Usually I only do two or three colors in one go -- a base color for a bunch of models, then one highlight.  This time I did eight separate colors.

These guys are supposed to be shadow dragons, so I wanted them to be mostly black, but with a hint of color.  I also did some basecoating for Eldar rangers and a couple of Ultramarines, since its the same dark blue.

Elementals airbrushed

I decided to do one as a water elemental, and one as a fire elemental.  I'll be drybrushing towards red on the fire one.

Merriods airbrushed

I wanted these guys to be kind of shark monster things.  I think the blue-grey works pretty well.

The ettins didn't get airbrush action, because they don't have the same kind of overall color.

Next up, drybrushing and washes.

The blue one doesn't stand out quite as much in real life.

The photo was taken while the wash was still wet.  It mellowed out a bit.

These guys came together pretty nicely pretty quickly.  I think the bone in shards in the clubs work pretty well, though the skin isn't even yet.

Now time to add some detail.  These guys are all pretty big, so you can't get away with skipping out.

I really like how the teeth and tongue turned out.  I had a hard time getting a color I liked for the tongues.  I ended up using about a 50/50 mix of Reaper's Rosey Shadow and Fire Red, then washed with with really thin out Fire Red.  I'm not really too happy with the gum color, it turned out kind of plum colored.  At least it's distinct from the tongue.

Next up -- final detailing (eyes), then basing.  I've been doing a really single sand base, drybrushed with browns or greys, depending on what will contrast nicely.  I think for these larger bases, I'll add some static grass.  I also want to try to make the Merriod bases look wet, so I picked up some Secret Weapon Realistic Water.  We'll see how that goes.

Thanks, Lord Alino.  Descent is a dungeon crawling board game.  If you think of a board game version of D&D, you wouldn't be too far off.

I finished the big guys, and figured I'd get the get photos of the smaller ones that had previously finished.  Unfortunately, two people from my board game group bailed this week, so I'll have to wait until next time to show them off.

I'm really happy with the faces on these guys.  I used the Secret Weapon Realistic Water on the base.  The first layer ended up with a serious concave section in the middle, which took two more layers to fill.

Ettins
Descent miniatures IMG_3364
These guys will smash your face.

Shadow Dragons
Descent miniatures IMG_3363
These guys will bite off your face instead.

Elementals
Descent miniatures IMG_3362
I tried a little OSL on the base for the fire elemental.  I'm not sure if it looks glowy, or if it just looks like I was sloppy when painting.

The party
Descent miniatures IMG_3381
The skeleton in back is from the first Reaper Kickstarter, and is the first of those minis I've painted.  It's a familiar, that the green necromancer dude can summon at will.  All the heroes get Secret Weapon bases, to stand out a bit.

The rest of the heroes
Descent miniatures IMG_3382
These are the heroes that came in the box that nobody chose.

Zombies
Descent miniatures IMG_3379
They like to high-five each other.  I really like how the loose bones came out in the back.

Flesh Moulders
Descent miniatures IMG_3377
These guys ended up kind of bland.  The purple between their hands is supposed to be a magic fireball thing they can shoot, but it almost looks like a scarf that they're dancing with.

Spiders
Descent miniatures IMG_3376

Goblin archers
Descent miniatures IMG_3370
The soft plastic really suffers with these models.  The one on the far right has the arrow bent way out of shape.

Barghest
Descent miniatures IMG_3368
I'm happy with the gore and bone sticking out of these evil undead wolf things, but I'm not sure how well the fur matches it.

It was a lot of fun to work through all these.  I'm sure this is old news to everyone here, but it's amazing how much even a moderate paint job does to a game like this.
