In the current meta I can hardly see a place for them.
Most of the AR 2+ threats come from Stormshield/Hammer Terminators. Incubi dont want to fight that. 3++ is hard to get over, S8 ignores Fnp and the 3+ armor.
So they cant take powerful melee units head on. they have to focus on "high value non melee units". And we have dozends of weapons for this job already.
You can't distill a unit down to whether or not they can tackle hammernators 'head on'. Nothing wants to do that. AP 2 is a bonus to carving 3+. Its the threat and the potential, it doesn't make 2+ the primary target.

At thread- how about shrouded campers or devs or crons or deep striking suits or even mega nobz and SW terminators or any of the other plethora of units that incubi can wreck that would take an inordinate amount of shooting to deal with. These are things that vacuum type analysis falls flat on.

Just like grots from the previous book I feel that incubi often get mislabeled by too much theory hammer and not enough actual game time. They aren't splinter cannons but they are far from unusable.

No you can not.
But why paying for AP2 if you wont use it anyways? The main problem here is: there is only a very few things (if any) that is better and safer dealt with Incubi than with Splinter Cannons.
3 Incubi are already the price of a Venom.
Evaluating a unit in the abstract is a fine but the instances where a counter assault unit with ap2 would of saved the game are things that just can't be taken into account. Who would of thought I would need to kill 3 DoC chariots with incubi?! Not me. But I did and it likely won me the game since he had destroyed all other anti tank I had and was summoning chariots because I couldn't shoot them down. Awesomely bloody game btw..

Another example is tau suits. Better shot then assaulted. But how about deep striking suits with farshiit- mini bomb? When they land and pop multiple skimmers and warriors fall out theres not much to fear there. Incubi otoh are a serious concern for whether or not to land right in their lap. This has happened to me. Warriors ate overwatch and incubi took the unit to tatters due to ap2 ws/init 5.

Whether or not terminators are a prime target they still fear incubi as much as the reverse especially if theres a shadowfield in tow. Not th/ss that is.

Edit- whoops got lost on a tangent. Anyway point is even though 40k favors shooting CQC is more powerful once you get there and incubi are good enough to compete with shooters. Diversify your threats.

I want to believe in Incubi but the main problem I have had is that T3 thing, which again, is kind of an army wide problem that could have been addressed in this dex.
Their transport is a prime target. It will get shot down, it is just a matter of how close you can get them to the enemy. Then I'll typically lose one in an explosion, maybe then get pinned and watch as they are bathed in a lovely wave of shooting with 2s or 3s to wound. 3+ armour won't hold. Then I find I regret taking a knife to a gunfight.
What Incubi and other open topped transport units need is a characteristic test against explosions. Initiative tests followed by a Dangerous Terrain check would circumvent the loss of squad members. OT gets really harshly treated in the rules.
Assault grenades. Duh. Where have they all gone!? I do want to run Drazhar and co, they look so good, but it just hasn't worked.

T3 is the nature of the pointy-eared beast unfortunately.

The big deal is the current saturation of S6 & S7 shooting on the tables due to the proliferation of CWE & Tau & their buckets of shooting. Hopefully GW stays the course with this current power leveling we're seeing in 7th & they get around to those 2 books sooner rather than later (only 2.5 books left before we start over again! Lets go blood angels & necrons! SoB, you.... probably aren't going to see the light of day....) I'm hoping for Blood Angels > Necrons > CWE > Tau for a 40K release order. Just to bring those first 2 books up to speed, and then to kick the legs out from under those last two...
