| Ok Question about Night shields. How many of you use them and are they worth it? I have always put it on EVERYTHING but I have been questioning them lately. When you run 5-8 Vehicles that tax can start to add up. Looking at 100ish points and that is another unit.
Thoughts? | |

| Well it depends and I've never really come to a conclusion personally. On gunboats that plan to sit in cover definately. On assault transports same. That said Its always on the chopping block for me.
I personally don't often consider them on every unit, usually just my main combat element(s) rides and leave it at that. Kinda like a disincentive to target that unit, then the added benefit of increased durability.
Otoh night fight gives the same effect on the turn it matters most. And thats how my work day usually goes inside my head..

| I bring night shields on my raiders, but don't mind swapping them for other upgrade. I never take them on flyers though. | |

| I put them on transports and dissie ravagers. (The bulk of fire makes Snap Shots less painful.) Not on Lance Ravagers though. | |

| If I have spare points I add them to my wwp archon raider with blasterborn first, then to my assault raiders if I have them. When it is all added up, maybe 1 or 2 boats get them. They are a nice to have, definitely not must have | |

| I find myself putting them on my Raiders but not my Ravagers. I've had too many Explosion results kill the units inside for me not to put shields on for the 3+ jink. Against an enemy that ignores cover it's a waste but overall it's not bad. If they ever FAQ or update the rules to where Jinking affects the unit inside the transport, then I probably won't bother with them. | |

| I generally prefer the extra unit, but I will put them on dedicated transports for assault units sometimes. 3+ jink can be nice to get guys and girls into combat, although its a bit dicey with all the Ignores Cover out there at the moment.
If I have 15 points spare I'll consider putting it on a flyer. Aside from the times it will be jinking anyway (say being harassed by a Crimson Hunter, or going off the board next turn anyway), I like the idea of the 6+ cover save against lucky snap shots. Not as much as I liked the flickerfield of course, but hey, that's 7ed.

| I put them on everything that can take them. If I ruin a round of shooting to jink, I want to make sure that it's worth it! | |

| Now that the serpent shield does not make them wasted points anymore, I have started putting them on more and more of my boats. Last game I played I put it on everything, just to see what would happen. When the game ended I still had over half my boats on the board. Immobilised and/or with one hullpoint for the most part, but still contributing. And that was after taking two turns of heat from a warhound scout titan and a storm wing formation. Only one game, but I'm starting to become a believer. since I only need 25% coverage from terrain on a ravager with night shields to get a 4+ save, that is enough for me to forego jinking and ( hopefully ) fire at full BS next turn. | |

| Normally no. And a big no no on multiple boats. I might consider one on a boat carrying CC dethstar if I got extra points. It's an upgrade that never kills anyone. I'd rather have chain snares. | |

| I put them on Blasterborn boats and if I use a Raider for WWP Medusae, I'd put them on that too (but been using a Venom lately), otherwise I don't bother. Definitely not on flyers or Ravagers.
Out of interest, do you guys use them on the 2 raiders for the Grotesquerie? Seeing as they are only going to burn over the table right into the opponents face anyway, doesn't really matter if their ride gets popped I guess?

| I try to at 1500 or above. Below that no and not always at higher levels either. Its definitely worth it if theres room. Not to mention I try to avoid parking right in the line of fire and we have decent terrain so I'll often have my raiders intact on the assault turn which is key. | |

Why chain snares? Did I miss a useful strategy?

| Well, bein able to tank shock opens up a lot of tactical possibilities - especially for empty raiders.
Not that I use them, admittedly (obviously I'm too busy buying overpriced crap for my character), but I can at least see the appeal.

Depends what you want/need to do, and what else you have available. For example, it might be easier to shoot some units off an objective. But, what about late-game after losing a lot of your army? Or, against a unit that's just a pain in the ass to kill? Also, it could be that your Raider has jinked, lost its gun, or is shaken - so either has no (or extremely inefficient) shooting. In any case, it's not like the ability to tank shock prevents you from shooting when you want to. Hell, you can tank shock and then still shoot. At the very least, it's a nice option to have. The question is whether you want to pay 5pts apiece for said option.

This. Agree! The cost of night shields is prohibitive for me - I would only apply it to a flyer myself.

| Option to tank shock to objective (with obsec boat) is a game winning move some times. Your opponnent, cannot bubble wrap objectives so efficiently when you have that option. | |
