I haven't seen any discussion on this formation since Skari did his 20 games about a year ago. Since that time the new dex has been released potentially changing what he fielded (would field) by quite a bit.

For those unfamiliar the formation is from GWs apoc book and is as follows:

1 succubus/lelith

2+ wych units
1+ reavers unit(s)
1+ hellions unit(s)

0+ beastmasters unit(s)
0+ bloodbrides unit(s)

Special Rules: Frenzied beasts- beastmaster models in a dark olympiad gain combat drugs. Grand finale- AN ARMY THAT INCLUDES a dark olympiad rolls twice on the combat drugs chart and applies both results (does not say re-roll duplicates). The last rule is no longer relevant.

I'm thinking frenzied beasts and grand finale make for some very interesting beast packs, including single model clawed fiends which I currently utilize.

It's worth noting that in this formation the actual beastmasters become almost strictly superior to hellions due to combat drugs, beast unit type (thus fleet) and reduced cost by 3 pts per model, only missing the hellglaive. In return they get the benefit of hidden rending flocks and such.

Reavers also stand to benefit greatly from grand finale while wyches and hellions might actually be brought into the realm of functional with the right rolls.

Considering that 4/6 drugs are desirable with 2 being stellar and the other 2 still quite good, the odds of getting something worthwhile are high with potential for +2 strength or toughness, or even +1 strength and toughness (consider what these do for rw flocks khymera and fiends or even reavers) and the formation seems worth exploring.

So anyone out there ever field this formation or considered fielding it? Lets hear your thoughts.

Its worth noting that as a Apocalypse Formation, it can only be used in Apocaylpse games.
So its quite possible very few people would have had a chance to use it.

While that is technically true I doubt many would have a real problem with it considering where the game has progressed since it was released such as the induction of apoc level super heavies into normal games.

I find the formation intriguing because it has potential to enable a viable horde style list rather than the more typical skimmer spam. Hellions and beastmaster units become role players here to fill the void of ranged anti infantry while anti tank would largely be handled by combat supplemented by reaver and skimmer heavy weapons.

You are forced to take three worthless units, which the Formation doesn't improve to the point of 'doesn't suck.'

And yet, as Jimsolo points out, a fair few completely useless units.

Try the Storm of Blades formation from Warzone: Valedor.

1 Archon and 3+ units chosen from Reavers, Hellions, Warriors, Trueborn, Scourges,...
All units than can have a dedicated transport must buy it and may not leave it.
they can shoot the turn they use aethersails and you can give skyfire to a unit each turn.

Storm of blades sounds like a pretty decent formation. I'm not a wych fan personally never really have liked them or hellions but the olympiad looked intriguing for the potential to stack the good drugs.

Meh since it seems no one but skari has tried it this thread can die off..
