There's a book, called Eon. Can't recall the writer. In it a crew finds an asteroid, hollow one, with a cylinder shaped hole drilled inside it. Endless, that is. In it there are areas where there is no oxygen, weird gravity, weird physics, stuff like that. Some areas you can live in and settle (and are indeed settled), some are inhabitable and need a proper gear to get through (say a spaceship of very advanced kind). I imagine the webway being that, a paradox tunnel (a network of tunnels) which have different laws in different parts. One of the best pieces of SF I've read.
