| So, when 40k makes an 8th edition what all do you guys think needs fixed? My two problems are these -
Formations. You should only be allowed 1 and they should cost points in my opinion and they shouldn't alter the point costs of things.
Races. I think they need to minimize the number of races again. Or do something like a base race and an ally race chart. (Which would be weird)
Basically here are the races I think there should be.
The Inquisition - Sisters of Battle, Grey Knights, Inquisition, Officio Assassinorum Adeptus Mechanicus - Skitarii, Cult Mechanicus, Knight Titan Imperial Guard - Astra Militarum, Militarum Tempestus, Officio Assassinorum Eldar - Eldar, Harlequins Dark Eldar - Dark Eldar, Harlequins
(And I'll list the armies that don't need to absorb others) Chaos Marines Chaos Daemons Tau Orks Tyranids Necrons Space Wolves Dark Angels Blood Angels Space Marines
And I don't know how I feel about Khorne Daemonkin... I mean if they made a codex for each of the 4 and got rid of the base Chaos Marines and Chaos Daemons codex maybe.
I also feel as if they should stop supplements. (Like for DE, why not just have a section in the book for each of the 3 - Wych Cults, Covens, Kabals. For Chaos - Plague Daddy, Khorne, Slaanesh, and Tzeentch) So we'd have 15 armies. Which seems like enough variety to me.
As of right now we have TWENTY THREE armies. (A little excessive, no?)

| I've got to say I mainly diagree. I think one of the strengths of 40k is the vast variation in races and armies you can field. Limiting them brings us back to the GW attitude from a few years ago of making everything incredibly simplified down. We're only just moving out of that into more interesting things again (and as was pointed out in the most recent Splintermind, our Codex was released during a "simplify" era). I actually really like the potential for varied armies using multiple detachments/formations. THey mix things up a bit. No more is it "I play Guard, he is the one super-competitive Guard list that works". We're in an age where those Guard could be in a mixed Imperial force which can be very different from others but still sompetitive. I therefore whole-heartily approve of losts of formations, supplements, varied armies/races, etc. More armies only means more variation, and thats never a bad thing in a game that can very easily get bogged down in nothing but Marines. | |

| I also disagree. More armies and more detachments make for more options and variety. That is a good thing.
Things I want to see fixed:
Terrain rules Flyer Rules Grav PSI phase Allies chart still no to hit modificators vehicles

| I don't mind the variation if we were starting from a level playing field. But when GW add in ridiculous things like 500+ free points, army-wide twin-linking, ignores cover and tank/monster hunter, +1BS and +1 on vehicle damage tables on units equipped entirely with melta weaponry for some, already strong, armies and other, weaker armies get such delights as a 6+ cover save on the first turn then there's clearly balance issues.
I don't necessarily agree with the OP's suggestions but something clearly needs to be done to level the playing field.

| I for one like the different detachments and formations available as it gives us more variety and keeps us coming back to the codex/supplement and asking questions on different builds etc | |

| Fold together dark Eldar and harlequins but not Space Marines?
What about no? | |

| I like formations actually. And I like the way they can be used to produce fluffy armies that actually get a break with some neat bonuses.
But as Count said balance issues have crept in. I think the bonuses were fine, but the 'free points' formations have been a debacle. So nix the free points and just add some dinky special rules and we're all sweet there. I also like the diversity of armies, I'd be perfectly happy with 50 playable factions.
For 8th edition I'd like more ambitious fixes, particularly: - Monstrous creatures, characters, super-heavies etc to degrade as they take damage. A thing with 1/6 wounds left should not be as potent as a thing with 6/6 wounds left. - better integration of super-heavies and gargantuans in general, and especially for S: D - snap shots revised so they are linked to the firer's BS somehow - reroll hits would be my preference - hierarchy of snap shots so that multiple conditions that individually require snap shots prevent shooting full stop - more tactical depth for overwatch, like assault grenades suppressing it - some kind of payoff for outflanking enemy units that are not vehicles; fire arc, crossfire penalty? Something! - Battle Brother characters shouldn't be able to join allied squads. 90% of allied shenanigans fixed.
Those are my main gripes.
