Not really.

The salamanders are most people's first response, but in the end they're just another tool of the regime.

There are some (non-playable) neutral forces in the 40k universe. The hrud and eldar exodites come to mind, as do the remnants of the old ones. The harlequins are something of a neutral - as is Nurgle (in his own way). To make things even more complicated, some of the corrupt/renegade marine chapters have a truer moral compass than many loyalists (soul drinkers are the most fluffed out).

40k really isn't about good guys, it's about the bad guys you most associate with.

I think the mistake here is that everybody is taking the stereotypes too literal. Yes the Imperium is opressive and brutal. But not every Planet is a terror regime. Yes Space Marines are remorseless killers but not every Chapter/Squad. We have a lot of occasions where Chapters speak out against the methods of an imperial representative (Logan Grimnar at Armageddon, Uriel Ventris at the destruction of Chordelis, Inquisitor Thaddeus hunting the Soul Drinkers,..) or even actively fighting it.

A lot of stories are composed around these "good guys".
But yes... in the greater scheme of the universe every race is racist and driven by pragmatism.

We really don't we're just too damn self interested to recognize that abject terror-fueled pain is not the only source of sensation we could maintain an existence on. Our fear of she-who-thirsts keeps us from exploring other experiences that could lead to eternal life.

Imperium is kinda good. So is Tau and eldar. Orc and chaos are mostly chaos-aligned. Necron are evil and tyranids are neutral.

But, to come back to the topic, I wonder if allying with imperial guards would be good, with a coven army. I imagine a grotesque frontline, backed with basilisks artillery. Maybe a dark artisan, or a corpsethief claw.

Sadly that's the problem with almost any ally these days. They're pretty much all better than us so the sensible thing to do is to take the allies in place of the DE. But then you're not playing DE, which is what we all want to do!

I can write a DE list and then look at the Craftworlds codex and replace pretty much any DE unit with a Craftworld unit that is cheaper and better.

Thats why I ally with Harlequins. They complement us, not substitute us.

Masque detachment. Troupes with caress, Starweavers and Shadowseers. Oh, and Voidweaver, but becouse I dont really have a choice.

Helps a lot with units that DE struggle or simply cant deal with: vehicles, invisible units, gargantuan creatures, superheavies and cover abusive units.
