| Originally I thought the same thing, that you could take multiple. The cause of the confusion is the per army bit, but after it clearly says a model may select ONE of the following. Now the next bit of confusion is the fact that in the diabolical play things leave out the bit about a model selecting ONE, and focuses a lot on the whole each one is unique thing... In the end we must follow the rule that in situations like this, simply leaving out something is not grounds to break the rule, in order to take multiple Diabolical playthings the rule would have to say "you may take more than one". Omission isnt permission. | |

| Permission is given in the Covens book: - Quote :
- Any units from a Detachment or Formation presented in this book that can select Artefacts of Cruelty cannot select from those listed in Codex: Dark Eldar, but can instead select Diabolical Playthings, presented opposite, at the points costs shown.
Artefacts of Cruelty are (for no apparent reason) restricted to one per character. Diabolical Playthings are not. The restriction is given in the codex only in the wargear list, and there is no equivalent to that list in the covens book and therefore no equivalent restriction. Our codex is gimped enough as it is without artificially imposing a restriction that doesn't apply.

| I don't know, it feels dirty. Are there similar circumstances to draw parallels? I have been playing that stuff like that would require specific permission. It feels like if we were meant to take more than one it would say it as it contradicts our other codex. I know consistency is a bit much to ask of GW... I mean, I would love sump with my dark artisan/nightmare doll. Would get across the map faster and be able to reroll charge, so I wouldnt be too upset about being wrong. Playing some games tomorrow so if that's really how it is I might just try this. | |

Our codex is gimped enough as it is without artificially imposing a restriction that doesn't apply. I wouldn't say that it's an artificial restriction. Covens doesn't tell us HOW we are to take their relics. It just says characters that COULD take artefacts of cruelty replace their ability to do so with the ability to choose from this alternate list. Since it refers us to our ability to take artefacts of cruelty, and the ability to take an artefact of cruelty being the qualifier for being allowed to take a covens relic, having a relic would disqualify us from the Codex relics, thereby canceling out the original qualifier that allowed your character to meet the qualification for "is allowed to take artefacts of cruelty". Basically, the limit is only in the 1 book, but the second book refers to the first book, and never gives us an alternate "how" explanation, so we'd follow the same process for selecting relics as outlined in the core codex, including the limit to 1 relic. The fact that every single codex that has been released from 3 books prior to the covens book, and every book since then has limited relics to 1 per character clearly spells out intent. So, while there COULD be some confusion or debate regarding RAW, the intent is inarguably clear.
