Getting ready for the next local tournament (here we use http://www.communitycomp.org/ and trying to solve some problems that I've come across in recent games.

CAD 1
Lhamaean in Raider, Disintegrator
5 Warriors, Sybarite, Blaster in Dual Cannon Venom (Warlord)
5 Warriors, Blaster in Dual Cannon Venom
5 Warriors, Blaster in Dual Cannon Venom
1 Ravager, 3 DLs
1 Ravager, 3 DLs
1 Ravager, 3 DLs
CAD 2
Lhamaean in Raider, Disintegrator
5 Warriors, Blaster in Dual Cannon Venom
5 Warriors, Blaster in Dual Cannon Venom
5 Warriors, Blaster in Dual Cannon Venom
1 Ravager, 3 Disintegrators
3 Cronos, 1 Spirit Probe, 2 Spirit Vortex
1 Aegis Defence Line w/ Comms Relay

So real simple; the Cronos deploy inside/behind the Defence Line, whilst manning the Comms for T2 reserve rolls, allowing my army to full reserve if not a favourable matchup/table side etc. I do feel a little light on AT with the 3 Ravagers and Warrior Blasters but I think the Cronos should be enough to hold my army in reserve against drop pod and alpha strike armies.

Suggestions welcome

I actually spent a lot of time researching this to give this relatively short(for me) answer. I don't really feel comfortable giving advice for this particular tournament because I find their comp rules to be overly oppressive. It's simply too much. It seems like it was made by people feeling like there was a specific way armies should be built and anything deviating from that should be punished. Almost everything good in the game is hit with what amounts to a 33% points penalty.

I'd imagine that seeing lists at the comp cap is not at all unusual. And if that's the case, then why bother with all the pretense? Just let people make their lists and play by the rules.

I mean, what is your list at? like 9 comp points? 10? Comp rules this extensive and invasive alter the entire list-building process to be about beating the comp rules instead of creating good lists and playing the game. These rules don't make the game better or more fun. They make it exhausting and drain the fun right out of it.

Oh, and of course the comp rules still allow for grav spam without heavy points penalties.

Um... I think composition rules are good. The ITC does it. A lot of tournaments do it. Warhammer out of the box is possible, but probably not advisable.

This one is a bit more detailed and complicated than I am used to, but... I generally dont fall afould of such rules anyways in my lists. But even I might have to alter some lists slightly to comply here. Not much though.

Anywho as for the list, the Cronos seems an odd selection to wait with the Comms Relay. Its ranges are so short and its role so synergistic that it seems somewhat odd to leave it with the Comms Relay? I mean sure, no one is going to remove them from there before the ycan use the Comms relay to good effect probably, which might be your goal. That's my only question here.

I'm not really arguing against simple comp like "only 1 gargantuan or superheavy LoW". I'm arguing against complex, heavy-handed comp systems that take even the most mundane of army lists and penalize them with 15-30% of possible overall tournament score.

Without looking at the comp rules, if you just randomly generated an army list based on units you wanted to use with any random faction, you'd probably end up being somewhere half the limit up to the comp limit, if not over it. That's overkill.

Having to take an army full of nothing but scouts and 1 or 2 non-special characters not upgraded beyond level 1 psykers just to not lose points is silly.
