Hi folks

I've recently started my first foray into a proper 40k army, and though I may as well have the forum account to match!

I've started with a new Start Collecting box to cut my teeth, the first of which I've already posted in the modelling section under my Shard... Something Kabal topic.

Look forward to chewing the cud with you fine chaps/chapettes soon!

I recommend buying 50 more Start Collection boxes.

Also - You may want to ask an admin/mod (Cavash, maybe?) to move your project to the Project Logs (Where we keep long term projects like entire armies)

Welcome to the forum. The start collecting box is a great start for the cost. You can use everything in it but you will probably want to drop the archon later if you are looking for a more cost effective HQ. A second start collecting box wouldn't be bad to buy and then some venoms.

Thanks for the input!

I think I'll be picking up another box and maybe a venom next, been looking forward to painting one, it's a lovely model. I'm yet to acquire a codex, but what is the accepted wisdom on the HQ choice? Not a huge fan of the base archon model...

Either a Succubus with an Archite Glaive (AP 2) or a Lhamaen are the usual choices for people. The Lhamaean while not an independent character is only 10 points and can be given a Venom as a dedicated transport. But a if you are deepstriking in say Scourges a cheap Archon still makes a great taxi service for the WWP delivery system.

Webway portal?

Sounds good, 10pts??? That's very cheap.

Is the formation from the start collecting box a decent choice initially? I had pretentions to up my reaver count to 10, give them preferred enemy and hose something down good and proper. Not sure they are best with guns or without though. As I understand it they're a bit more of a CC unit.

WWP = Webway portal, sorry get into some habits.

Well she can't be upgraded and only has a 5+ armor save but does come with 2+ poison on her weapons, what you are taking her for is just to have a valid HQ as cheap as possible and the Venom that doesn't take up a Fast Attack Slot.

Reaver Jetbikes, most people dont give them blaster, they can't fire them if you jink. Always upgrade with Cluster Caltrops. Heat Lances are strongly debated one way or the other. They are best used in CC rather than ranged.

As for the formation, well the discussion in it pretty much came down to, using the Archon's ability would be very tricky and once the new faq hits or if your gaming group is already using it, our raider isn't worth taking as a gunboat. But the Raider is still great for delivering Grotesques to the field. I haven't tried to use the formation myself so I can't really comment on my experience with it unfortunately. Maybe someone with more experience can weigh in on it.

Sounds good- so Raiders aren't really worth it unless playing with something that needs delivering?

Is the SC box still worth it then? Or do you use the Raider as a counts as Ravager?

For the discounted price yes, ultimately you will be getting things that you can still use in game. With two of these you will have 20 warriors which can be split into 4 groups of 5 and put on venoms. The Archon still has his place when used in specific ways. Reavers are a good unit. The Raider might not be the best but if you expand to have grotesques in your army later slap some Aethersails on them and get them down the board quickly to charge. Many people do use them to count as Ravagers for cheaper then buying the Ravager.

However, a raider with a disintegrator is still decent for the prices giving us some much needed AP 2 at range or maybe that extra Dark Lance. You can always take one empty.

I would still say it is worth buying to get your army going.

Smile sounds good. I shall keep that in mind on my travels through the EBay, see if I can't snag some deals.

Thanks for your thoughts! I appreciate it.

If decide to have grotesques, unless you find a good deal on them on ebay it is recommended you convert your own do to them being so expensive.

Awesome, I've seen some of that on the site. Just a hodgepodge of violent looking stuff everywhere?

In think the easiest way to convert grotesques are vampire counts crypt horrors. Just slap the talos mask on them. One of those talos boxes has a ton of those masks...

That's a really nice idea. Following the same lines, Skaven Stormfiends or rat ogres might make for good conversions from the Talos box... And so the wheels commence turning

I actually converted the Skaven Storm fiends into talos and the crypt horrors into grotesques.

Sounds saucy. When I'm next on the computer I shall look for pictures of such marvels! For strictly scientific purposes, you understand...
