For those of you that have played a few games, I'm curious about how you've handled deployment for getting the desired match ups for your army.

One tactic that I see as being vital in 8th is the ability to put the right weapons on the right units. I don't want to be wasting multi-damage shots in single wound models. I want to get those units and those weapons in position to fire at multi-wound models. For example, I don't want to be shooting at single wound marines with my blaster.

Have you guys had success doing this in the deployment phase or did you have to compensate with movement to get into position for this?

4 games in thus far. The most important thing that comes to mind in deployment is how critical it is now to bubblewrap your valuable units such that the enemy can't deepstrike 9" away and charge them or soak them in rapid fire Terminator shooting (or both).

Small units of 3 Razorwing Flocks or 2 Khymerae staggered throughout your deployment zone will, I think, be very valuable in denying deepstrikes - even if going MSU like that will mean giving up turn 1.

All the games I've played thus far but one have been against hypermobile armies in which both of us were moving around the board rapidly anyway - DE is a great army for being able to move quickly. The last game was against footslogging Thousand Sons, where I split my deployment - 2 Raiders on the extreme left flank, and 2 on the extreme right. He split his forces halfway to engage both, and the DE were fast enough to join flanks on one side of the board and overwhelm 50% of his force at a time.

Deployment should be talked about more than it is.
Deployment wins you games.

With the new IGOUGO deployment system and my preference for MSU(ish) style lists ill be messing with my opponents head before the game has even begun. By placing fast, cheap units on both flanks and deep strike units first i can keep him guessing and hide my intentions for as long as possible.

Only once my opponent has run out of units and his battle plan is clear as the nose on his face will i place my most powerful assets in position to do the most damage and face the least counter fire.

I will go second but I'm the type of cold, calculating Archon that prefers it that way so i can counter deploy and beta strike.

I'm stoked this is the new deployment system. It suits my army and my merciless, tactical brain perfectly. Twisted Evil  Cool

Take lots of 5 man squads. Give you the flexibility to modify how many units you "deploy".

Playing against a small Grayknight list? Split everything up, and just deploy a few warrior squads on foot to see where he deploys first (if at all).

Playing against a Nid player? Put two 5 man units in a raider, and complete deployment first (and go first).

That's my $0.02

Any thoughts on the best unit to bubble wrap our characters with? Something cheap so we can put more out there? Or something that will have more staying power? Or maybe a combination of both?

Or maybe something that has some strong offensive capabilities that can eliminate threats as they get close? Kinda like body guards.

That's what vehicles are for.
