I wasn't going to start the discussion with the codex on the horizon as it would all change on release day. But now that the codex seems further off than hoped, the question still seems relevant.

What detachments are people using? I'm finding it tricky and just going in circles with it. I've been using a battalion at 1000pts. I'm now trying to step my army up to 2000pts and I keep ending up still at a battalion. I don't mind from the CP aspect so much, as an index army can only use so many. But I'm finding 3 FA slots very restrictive. So I add an outrider detachment, but I just can't seem to find the points or justify a 3rd HQ.
What are other people running with and why? Does anyone else find their fast attack slots gone far too quickly? Is a battalion all the CPs we need at the moment?

I've mostly been playing 1500 point games (seems to be local preference?) and that makes things much easier - Battalion all the way, with a Haemonculus warlord and cheap Archon as secondary HQ.

Scaling up to 2000 points, I'm pretty sure I'd either stick with a Battalion or use the extra points as an excuse to have a Craftworld patrol detachment with a Doom Farseer.

Well as CP isn't an issue for you, I would suggest starting with an Outrider detachment, build what you want outa that and then choose a secondary detachment that fills the holes of the list as I think most detachments allow for at least one troop choice. But I do understand the idea of not wanting 3 HQ choices.

You only get 3 in a battalion which isn't that many. Yoi get 6 elites. I'm quite fond of pairs of khymerae for area denial and deep strike protection.

I run a brigade at 2k. This isn’t good advice I just like CP and being forced to take a variety of models

Just dark eldar, usually a battalion or 2 outrider detachments.

When mixing things up I usually take a battalion (dark eldar) and an outrider detachment some fast attack and some harlequins/craftworld

I find Warriors useful, so a Battalion seems to be the way to get most useful stuff with less tax HQs!

For the moment with nothing much useful from running a Drukhari detachment, you can use an Aeldari Detachment instead, and take a Farseer and Warlock as your HQ in an otherwise Drukhari force. You could take a Craftworlds Patrol to get Craftworld Attributes and Stratagems, but you don't have to.

Farseers have Smite, Doom, Executioner and Mind War, which are all useful if there are no other Craftworld units to buff. Warlocks have the negative effects of each of the powers that can be useful. My favourite would be Jinx to hinder elite units, and the buff half of Embolden is useful if you go with Mind War for the Farseer.

I tend to run 2 battalions, one Dark Eldar, one Harlequins.

Ikol - would you run out of slots if you took a single Aeldari Battalion instead? That could save you have two extra Drukhari HQs (it feels so wrong to say that though).

I might be in the minority here but I think Chapter Approved actually made our HQs somewhat worthwhile. An Archon with a Court is perfectly fine, and a Master Regenerist Haemonculus is shockingly tanky (especially if you also give them the Parasite's Kiss).

Unless you want to use the Webway then there admittedly still isn't much of a reason to use a pure Dark Eldar detachment, but at least our HQs don't feel like quite as much of a tax as they used to.

Eh, Agoniser Archon + Haemi with Regenesist and Parasites Kiss tend to do me well.

Cluster of T6 Vehicles for turn 1, Haemi jumps into the Venom with his Archon buddy, Ravagers move off, Raiders pick charge-targets and my Starweavers scoot around with Troupes of 5 + TM and Shadowseers, Skyweavers try to charge infantry.

I need the CP for my 2 Deepstriking squads of 10 Kab Warriors and the 2 Deepstriking Troupes, so I consider it worth it (I also need the two separate detachments so I can get both stratagems)
