Tabletop Ready Vehicles

I'm very unaccustomed to painting vehicles and not particularly great at it yet, are there any tips or techniques for very simple paintjobs that have the vehicle looking finished and modest on the tabletop?

I'm looking to find ways to experiment with an airbrush and improve my abilities but in the meantime I'd like to turn my old boats into something halfways respectable looking on the battlefield.
