Wyches - Making the charge Empty
PostSubject: Wyches - Making the charge   Wyches - Making the charge I_icon_minitimeMon May 13 2019, 19:55

Hey guys,

I got back into Warhammer 40K a few months ago.

I've played two matches with my Drukhari and my wyches have been doing a fantastic job. However, getting them safely across the table and into combat at full strength has been somewhat of a challenge.

In the first match I was able to park the raider behind cover and make the charge the second turn. In the second match I made the mistake of making them cross out in the open and one of my raiders was shot down.

Obviously I'm very new with this army (and the game in general) and I know that Drukhari has a long learning curve, but I could really use some advice on how to get the most out of these units.

Tnx

Wyches - Making the charge Empty

Hey welcome!
What obsession do you run your wyches? Each plays slightly differently as I'm sure you know. I have a little experience playing Red Grief and Strife and find them both great. My best tips would be to use line of sight blocking cover to your advantage like in your first game. Your wyches are unlikely to get a first turn charge, so lining them up for a turn 2 charge is the aim. By turn 2 pfp kicks in with its re rolls to charge and advance.
Making the most of disembarking is also key. By using the 3" disembarking move you extend your wyches to a 11" move and with that can easily charge 18" from where you parked your raider (or 21" for red grief).
Both obsessions are good. Strife hits harder, but Reg Grief is more forgiving to position correctly.

Hope that helps

Wyches - Making the charge Empty

Might also depend on the rest of the army composition. I run minimum of 3 raiders in every build with a lot of fire support in addition to them. Multiple targets. Usually if I have a raider full of Wyches they are the very least my opponent worries about and they can offload 3" then move 8". I don't typically mind them getting shot up, either, and dumping their contents for my next turn.

Also, DE is an army of forced redundancy. If I want to really see what Whyches do with some obsession or load out, or some other tech, I usually run 3 of the same thing.

Good luck with the raids!

Wyches - Making the charge Empty

Hey guys,

Thanks. I run my wyches as Cult of the Red Grief. Not being able to make the charge when I want too is simply unacceptable - this is especially true when I'm using Webway Portal. For example: In my first match against Ad Mech my Mandrakes didn't make their 9" charge. They died. Second match my Incubi didn't make the 9" charge. They could have changed the outcome of the battle - but they also failed. Of course I know I can re-roll charge rolls with Red Grief, but even then I find the 9" charge too much of a risk and I prefer the safety the raider provides for my wyches.

Yea Webway portal is risky for our assault units. Especially as we spend cp on it. We lack the ability to close the 9" like say GSC can. That said it doesn't hurt (personally) as much when mandrakes fail as their shooting is still good and they have the ability built in. I agree with nerdelemental, redundancy is key. If you want to try melee wyches in raiders take at least 2.

Yeah in a 2000 pts army I usually play 3x 10 wyches in raiders.

Despite the fluff, I don't think a webway drop is for us. Even my Scourges with built-in deep strike don't deep strike much. I'd just rather them on the table shooting first turn. I don't think I'd even consider deep striking a charging unit. Just guns. I deep strike far more with Craftworld and, because of this thread, I'm trying really hard to remember the last time I even thought it would be beneficial.

You might try Reaver support. They should be able to get a charge of the first turn possibly but the second turn for sure. They'll die, but they'll have tied something up for your Wyches to get going.

Yeah, and screaming jets is just as useless since you can only use that at the end of the movement phase.
