stealth and shrouded

was watching a game between tau and SW thurs eve and the SW outflanked and fired its meltas into the tau tank with its shrouded pods thingy, i expected the tau to take a 3+ cover save instead took 5+ jink only, as i don't interfere with other peoples games i didn't say any thing, after the game he said that the stealth didn't work as the SW were closer then 12"????

i cant find anything to back this up in the rule book have i missed something?

That would only be for Stealth occurring due to Night Fight, which is for shots between 12 and 24"

so to my mind the tau should still have had a 3+ cover save and just being say 6" away does not negate stealth or shrouded

Nope, the disruption pods don't work that close (the reason he would get a 3+). It's got nothing to do with the stealth or shrouded rule but the vehicle war gears rules

^This. Disruption pods only give you shrouded when being shot at from over 12" away.

What's interesting is night fight gives you shrouding when over 24" away, does shrouding stack with shrouding? No apparently not according to the Rule Book... So you get:

-within 12" 5+ jink
-within 12-24" 2+ jink (stealth + shrouded)
-within 24"-36" 3+ jink (shrouded + shrouded don't stack)
