You cna disembark as long as the vehicle has not moved more than 6''. Disembarking units may move their normal movement distance (6''), so the total distance is 12''. In 5th edition, you could disembar after moving 12'', but you couldn't move after disembarking (who you could deploy about 3'' away from the hull, giving slightly longer distance).

Don't worry, you were doing it correctly.

In 6the the "disembarking" IS your 6" movement. So you can't disembark 6" and then move 6 for a total of 12. You can move the vehicle 6". Disembark movement of up to 6". And that's it.

does not the fact that our transport are all scimmers, open-toped and fast help with this at all?

No, but it does allow us to charge after disembarkation. Which you cannot do even if the vehicle was stationary before disembarkation, unless it's an assault vehicle (Land Raider/Storm Raven, not sure of any others).
