| I am finding it hard to justify taking them. On the other hand putting 5 of them with a heamy in a tantalus seems like a very nasty thing to do. | |

| I run them with an archon or vect, sometime a haeme along with them to. Boosts your archons toughness to toughness 5. They will slaughter most units the get into cc with. | |

| They are fun though!
Urien, archon w/pgl and SF for the 2+ goodness, scissor and liquefier. Raider with NS, Aethersails and dissies. mmmmmm that's good ham.
Aside from the deathstar cost and nature, they sure make opponents shiver.
"what? Toughness 5?" " 2+ invuln?" "stealth saves vs. my bolter overwatch?" ( so you don't lose your 2+invuln, save that for flamers) "S7 on the charge????"
heh. not point effective but fun!

Gotta take your best available save bud. Also, LoS! is only for unsaved wounds, so... I assume the Archon kinda hangs out in the middle until it's stomping time?

| i agree they do sound like a lot of fun and could probably tear up units when they get in CC. Yup LoS comes before saves. | |

Absolutely, you choose prior to rolling saves what to LoS. So the Archon goes out front, you LoS (on a 2+) the unsaved wounds of anything that could insta-kill him should the shadow field collapse and or bolter fire if you fear the loss of the SF; and take the wounds from things that ignore cover like flamers. Remember though your opponent chooses which saves you take first; they are fully within their rights to demand the bolter fire chew up your SF before the flamer wounds hit! Remember the unit is T5 too, so wounding isn't that easy to start with, and T5 vs Plasma S7 still gets feel no pain if a Grot fails its save, the Archon does not. The PGL gives the unit a +1 to its cover save, if you are charging through ruins then its a 3+cover as long as you are within 8 inches of the unit being charged/overwatching you. So ideally, your 2++ can soak up the ignores cover saves/wounds, You LoS the rest to a nearby Grot who will get a cover save of 6+ to 3+, and hopefully make a save or two so you can bring all the pain possible in the ensuing combat. Be wary of having Urien close to take the LoS'd wounds-his regen is nice but wounds in CC are allocated to models in base, and wounded models HAVE to take them first, so he may never regen those wounds! Like any good non marine deathstar its point heavy, somewhat tactically inflexible, and requires some doing to get it to work, but it can be fun!

| also who doesnt like 4 multi-wound T5 models flying at an opponent like a super fast missile, carrying a haemie for FC and liquifier goodness, and an Archon to beatstick anything in their way???
Grots are good and cheap IC bodyguard. They dont impose as much as a threat that Incubi do (for some reason...) Yet they are just as potent... Just stay clear of GKs and their force weapon shenannigans...

| that really helps i think i am going to make a list that has that unit in it and use it on some nids. They should be able to handle a monstrous creature or 2 right. | |

| Adding my 2 cents late, but I would add that my unit of 3 Grotesques(+liquifier) with an Aberation(VB), in a Raider with a Haemonculus(Liquifier/VB) is pretty much my favorite unit right now. I have taken this combo for the last 10 games or so and have had them more than make their points back in all of those games. I try to target a soft unit to get the all-important third pain token (Haemi is only LD8). My opponents generally overreact to this unit causing disruption and drawing fire away from my other Raiders(win/win). On top of being fairly consistent performers, this unit is also a boatload of fun to play. Highly recommend Grotesques! | |
