Drove 2 Hours to Orlando for a RTT at 2000 points. When i got there, there were over 20 other players!
We were packed in, but it was a great store (Sci Fi City) with a great Air Conditioner, so it wasnt too bad.
After I arrived, I noticed they allowed Forgeworld (the 2 Lucius pattern drop pods, the ork missle trucks and wierd looking dreadnaughts made that apparent) and it was a dual force org tourney.
Ouch.
So, I turned in my list to the TO and he said "its great to see people playing for the fun of the game rather than to win"...
Seems like my list was one of the 4 single force org lists there. But newsflash... I came to win!
My List:
Baron
4 beastmasters
20 dogs
Farseer (jetbike, warding, spirit stones, shard)
6x 5 warriors/ venoms/ dual splintercannons/ 5 had blasters
2x 3 dark lance ravagers
1x 3 dissie ravager
6 windrider jetbikes/ 2 cannons
3 war walkers (all with scatter lasers, 2 missle w/ skyfire, 1 bright lance)
This list was created after much playtesting. The baron, beasts and farseer comprise 1 unit. This unit is disgustingly good, especially when buffed with fortune and/or prescience.
So, on to game 1.
Mission: rescue the hostage
Deployment: hammer and anvil
warlord: stealth ruins
drugs: reroll failed to wounds
Psychic: fortune, guide, prescience
A side note- Hammer and anvil? Really? With the "rescue the hostage" scenerio? So pretty much my opponent will hide the guy in a far, far corner and good luck to me getting him!
Opponent:
"Thor"'s Imperial Guard
Oh just freaking awesome. Hammer and anvil against guard.
Anyway, he had 5 platoons squads, bunched in a group of 2 and 3, buried in ruins. A ccs in chimera (with hostage of course), 2 manticores, a colossus seige engine and 4 units of vets in 4 vendettas.
4 flyers.
Sweet.
First turn: Dark Eldar. That was, until he SEIZED the initiative.
So, he rained long range no cover save missle and mortar death upon my head. Luckily, my hostage was in a building with a roof so it could'nt be hit by his indirect barrage fire weapons. I had a troop of 5 warriors (no blaster) out there baby sitting him as well.
His fire managed to take the sails off a ravager (immobile) and kill some dogs. Not nearly the damage I was expecting, but I will take it.
My turn saw fortune, guide and prescience off, ALL of my models move up, the dogs run (not the bike), and some inneffective shooting at his "gone to ground in ruins" troops.
1 hull point was taken from the CCS Chimera.
His turn 2 saw him roll "1,1,1,1" for his flyers.
Marbo also arrived.
His shooting saw 2 venoms downed. 1 unit pinned. Marbo threw a bomb at the unit holding the hostage, scatered back on itself, and "poof". No more Marbo.
My turn 2 (failed fortune!) saw the beasts within charge range of his troops on the left, shooting made the ones on the right run off the board and another hull point on his CCS Chimera.
Assault saw the beasts rip the IG a new one, gain a token, and run closer to his wall of tanks.
His turn 3 all the flyers arrived. they immediately took out both ravagers that were within range, leaving only the immobile one in my deployment zone, well out of reach of shooting anything.
The dogs took a pounding, and lost half the unit.
My turn 3 saw fortune, guide and prescience off, and some shuffling.
Shooting saw 1 vendetta with 2 hull points, 1 with 1. Assault saw the dogs tripple charge the manticore, colossus and CCS Chimera.
The seige engine lived, the others were glanced to death.
Turn 4- Last Turn. (time constraints)
All the flyers hovered and dropped the vets off. The game came down to if they could kill that unit, I could not get his hostage. There was no way for him to get to mine. So if the dogs die, the game is a draw.
Orders were called out, first rank fire second rank fire all around. All the vendettas fired, the seige cannon fired, the other manticore fired... if it had a gun, it fired!
Due to fortune... I ended up with the baron and 3 dogs.
My turn saw a ton of firing, wiping his ccs unit from the table.
The hostage was mine, time was up, game was over.
Victory Dark Eldar- 7/8 points.
MVP- The beastpack without question.
Great game, great opponent.
Game 2- Vs "Unnamed" and his Eldar Army.
Let me preface this report by saying: I was not going to go into detail about how this game really went. I was going to just report the results, and let it go. However, I decided to report the true, unvarnished, unexadurated details of what happened. It may be painful to read, but it was more painful to experience. My oppnents list:
3 wraithknights (1 was warlord)
3x 3 windrider jetbikes
spiritseer
3x 5 wraithguard with flamers in wave serpents.
Psychic: death mission, guide, prescience.
Drugs: +1 dice to fleet
warlord trait: Nightfight turn 1
Mission: Kill points
Deployment: Diagonal
We rolled to pick sides. That is where this game went downhill.
I won the roll, and he had a HUGE line of sight blocking wall on his side of the table, so I chose that side.
We switched sides, and he won the roll for deployment/ going first.
Then he said "hey, i lost a dice.. can you see it over there?"
We looked for his dice. i picked up terrain peices to make sure they were not inside, etc.
No dice (pun intended)
So, after 10 minutes of game time gone, he was still fretting about this dice. I was fretting over lost time. So, after 10 MORE minutes, he stands up, looks at me and says "The dice was in the middle of the table, and we are the only 2 here."
Um... excuse me? did this guy just insinuate I stole his DICE? really?
"Dude, i didn't take your dice"
It was at this point he asked me to empty my bag of dice on the table.
More bemused than insulted that a grown man (30+) would be going this bat crap crazy over a single dice, i emptied the bag.
Still no dice.
It was after 30 mins had elapsed that I said "We need to play, or you need to forefeit. either way, we gotta get going".
So we started.
He went first, moved his models, then said "Where the **** is my dice?"
"I didn't take your freaking dice! Just play the game! I will give you a dice to shut up about your dice!"
Oh, he did not like that.
"Whatever!" he said.
I went, moved a model, then said 'Ah, i forgot my psychic. He replied "its a tournament." so, i moved up, shot (ineffective) and charged a wave serpent he moved too close. First blood.
His turn, more of the same. Where is my dice, it is only us 2 here. Did you check your display board, I want my dice, dice this, dice that.... GAH!
2 of his wraithknights were on the board, but he unloaded all his wraithguard and flamered the dogs to death. all gone!
My turn, he insisted again about his dice. I was really trying hard to hold it together. So, in a calm measured voice I said:
"Listen. I did not take your dice. i do not like the fact you are accusing me of stealing a 10 cent peice of plastic. i do not like the attitude you are giving me, and if you can give me 1 good reason why I WOULD steal your dice, i would appreciate it."
After that, the attitude changed a bit. There were still a couple moments of "Where is my dice" but for the most part, it ended there. There was a point in this game I almost.. ALMOST just picked up my models and walked. It got that bad.
So, on my turn, my venoms introduced themselves to the now exposed wraithguard, and as the game went on, I wiped all his units except 1 waveserpent and 1 wraithknight (his general).
The TO announced "10 mins left" and my opponent with 2 models on the table said "We cant continue, it would take to long"
So we added up the kill points.
I won by 1.
SUDDENLY, he felt there was AMPLE time to continue. However, it came to naught but him getting 1 more kill point, and me destroying BOTH his remaining models to table him.
Winner: Dark Eldar 10/ 10 points
MVP: The venoms. Please, against guard and knights, what else could be?
After the game, my opponent apologised MULTIPLE times on his behavior. I accepted the apology, and went on. During the later parts of our game, he knocked his wraithknight off the table, where it shattered on the floor. He said "Well, i guess that is karma.. I acted like an a**hole, so i deserved that." So, during the game: rough, after: decent.
So onto game 3:
VS: Travis (one of the people we have going on our team to the ATC tourney)
So, drive 2 hours to play one of my own teammates! lol
His list:
Grey Knights
3 stormravens
coteaz
squad w/ psycannons , halberds, staff, etc
5 3 man squads (fleebs)
3 nemesis dreadknights
5 razorbacks w/ psybolt heavy bolters
Game: objectives
Psychic: Fortune, guide, prescience
First turn: DE
Warlord trait: Useless
This game was fun, fast and brutal.
Fortune on dogs mean the unit is nigh unstopable. The dreadknights flamered the dogs, razorbacks shot em, but nothing could stop them. They rampaged through his entire army.
The ravagers also shone, with guide and prescience, they were very reliable in taking down fliers.
At the end of the game, he had killed 2 venoms and 1 unit of warriors.
He got tabled.
Winner: dark Eldar: 10/10 points
MVP: The dogs
So, once again, the Dark Eldar take the victory and first place in a tournament.
On to the ATC!
A quick afterthought. Those of you that have read the progression of this list have seen it morph from a wych list, to beast centric, to what it is right now. At this point, i have to say i think I am happy with it as-is, and I think it can handle any if not every list out there.
Just this last tournament, I faced 7 flyers, got seized on by guard in a hammer/anvil deployment, and came out on top.
I have a LOT of practice games and tournaments coming up before the ATC, and will report how it does.
