| I'm just wanting to know how people run their Hellions, I love the models and am planning to buy a box or two - but I was wondering how to kit them out. Any input would be much appreciated. | |

| My understanding is that you (1) need Baron and (2) run them as a ~20 model blob. Aside from making them troops, Baron increases the survivability of the Hellions by giving them stealth and helping them pass difficult terrain tests. Taking a Haemonculus for a pain token could also be a good idea, provided that you are comfortable splurging nearly 500 points on one unit (Hellions, Baron, and Haemonculus).
That said, they're a fun choice. I've always been a fan of the wargear that lets you kidnap enemy independent characters....

| Wouldn't the hammy be a bad idea though? since they would lose their extra movement? | |

You take the haemie and then split him off right off the bat so that you don't lose the movement.

| Exactly.
Honestly, I have never tried straight Hellions but I also like the models. I think that it makes more sense to just use them as Beast Masters unless you are going for the gang-banger theme.

| I used to have Baron with a big blob of Hellions in my army. They did very little offensively, but they drew a TON of fire from people trying to get the Warlord VP. I ended up hiding them in terrain all game, every game.
EDIT: They are pretty terrible at offense. They get a lot of attacks and can disengage from combat, but against MEQ those attacks rarely turned into very many wounds. And then they would lose a bunch on the attacks back because they're still T3 with a 5+ save. They work better as a distraction unit. "Look at me, I have a juicy Warlord VP! Pay no attention to the murderous horde sneaking up your flank! Shoot me in the middle in this ruin!"
I've since replaced them with Urien & Grots in a Raider.

| I love hellions but rarely get the opportunity to play them as we usually end up going for small points games. I find them quite useful in a squad of 10, they throw out some useful firepower before assaulting quite effectively.
There are of course other things in the list that do those things so it really depends how you play. The pain token idea is good advice though!
