Baron worth fielding?

In my quest to be the ultimate hipster ever I am trying to make my DE army a bit different to the standard "load stuff in raiders and venoms, fly forward, kill stuff, redeploy, kill more, win" . I rather like the hellion models for a start, and think they have a decent potential for conversion. The baron is going to be important to the hellions staying alive (especially as he makes them troops) so my question is: Does the baron and hellion "drive by - hit and run" tactic actually work? It's a lot of points for the baron and 10 (more?) hellions, and as much as I want to have fun with my list, I don't want to sink a ton of points into a useless unit. Are hellions and the baron worth the points?

In my experience you'll lose about 2 - : of the hellions during a hit and run, so I personally don't think that attic is worth it, but having a unit that can score and move 12" seems like it could be useful.

Maybe try proxying a few models and have a go with your list on the battlefield so you don't need to purchase the models straight away. It sounds like it could be a fun list but in my experience hellions are far too fragile and crumple very easily when shot, also they are quite expensive points wise too.

Yeah as mentioned just proxy them in your next few games and see how they perform. IMO Beasts are better for the points, not scoring but still far more durable w/ rending attacks and can still HnR thanks to Baron

This has been done before - the best tactic with it seems to involve some Wrack/Haem shenanigans to get multiple pain tokens on the Hellions early so they can benefit from both FNP and FC which greatly enhances their surivability and damage output.

The builds of this that seemed to work also took max Hellions for the Baron's unit.

Yes, it is probably inferior to Beasts, though the shooting element and also the potential HoW attacks can be pretty devestating if everything works out correctly.

It is also worth big mention that Hellions have one crucial advantage over Beasts - they are Troops Choice.

Other then that, Beasts hit harder and are more survivable. However it might not matter if you dont hold that point at last turn.

One thing about Helions and shooting - try to use Focus Fire rule more often to not deny yourself a charge. Actually use it with all assault units with some shooting or nades.
