Dark City Dice Order 2014 - An Issue and A Soution

So this morning I awoke to the following email from our dice company.

Hello again,

We seem to have a problem with the design you sent.  As i was
processing the image to generate your sample, it was brought to my
attention that it is a Games Workshop design for the Dark Elf faction
of their fantasy game.  We were contacted by lawyers representing
Games Workshop a few months ago and were "warned" against using any of
their designs for this process.  We have not been able to do so since
then.  i would have told you about this earlier, but was not made
aware that it was one of their designs until just now.

Do you have an alternate design you might want to use for your project?

Not wanting to delay the already long dice process I quickly contacted EyeofError to see what we had available to use. We settled on the rune from the skull in our main logo.



I am sorry for the change but we were only informed last minute and I had to make an executive decision.

As always I will keep everyone informed of further developments.

That's unfortunate, but understandable. It's a good backup design, too. Clearly DE. Shall work well.

Personally, I actually think it's a bit better than the other glyph. More elegant, less spiky. And more obviously a TDC thing since it's on the site than generic-spiky-elf-glyph, with the bonus that those who ordered before get something slightly new. Looking forward to seeing a completed dice!

Good call, you did the right thing, and I think I may actually be happier with this outcome, I like that it links to TDC quite nicely now.

+1 Great solution to a stupid problem.

Wasn't the last glyph design another random thing Eye had thrown together? I'd be curious to see what copyrightable symbol they thought it was infringing on.

I'm fine with the alternate symbol, I actually like it better and think it looks even more DE themed.

The art we used last time was submitted by someone I dont recall who right now but it should be in the old threads, cleaned up by another user (not Eye) and worked fine. But they claim that within the last few months they got hit with a cease and desist warning from GW lawyers. Supposedly the art was originally from one of the fantasy Dark Elf books or at least too close in appearance to a rune that is there.

Am i correct in thinking the order is entirely placed at this point? As I'd be potentially interested if it's possible to grab a few with the new design.

The original doesn't match any rune precisely, but it is close to two (I checked this yesterday). I guess close enough for someone to get nervous about GW bringing the lawyer cannons to bear! But the new design is recognisably DE without being similar to any actual published rune, and it will work just fine

For my own personal tastes just possibly make the upturned crescent part of it just a smidge thicker in the centre for balance? I like the glyph look of it. Like it might explode or contain some kind of soul-rending tr...oops sorry, shouldn't mention that in public  

You'd have thought that when they rendered the prototype dice they may have spent the time to think about the design and any IP rights.......

The picture of the prototype die was from the last time we ordered dice, two years ago.

Do we have any updates on the dice order?

I have received the dice. I am in the process of sorting and packing or shipping. US orders should arrive by next week and all orders outside the US should have theirs within the next few weeks.
