PostSubject: Here There Be Monsters   Here There Be Monsters I_icon_minitimeMon Oct 27 2014, 21:46

Greetings,
This is a project I have wanted to do since 3rd edition, but until recently have not felt confident enough in my modelling skills to attempt. The goal is to create an army of those Eldar who have walked a darker path, the path of Chaos. Since the Eldar are by no means incorruptible, they surely contain within their ranks those who have succumbed.

I will be mixing in fluff and rules discussions with this project, but it is primarily an exploration through the medium of models.

Without further ado, here are some work in progress pictures of the first model I am creating for this project. It is based off of the Hespirax model but I will be using the rules for an archite with archite glaive and helm to represent the Khornate axe and Collar of Khorne she is wearing.

I already like where this is going.

It's a great throwback to the old original armies that caused the creation of the DE as a codex in the first place.

Here she is mostly painted though still drying. The base still needs some work including some blood pooling from the head of the Slaanesh worshiper she has slain.

Are you doing any shading or highlighting on the model? It looks very flat except for the hair and I'm not sure if that's the pictures or the technique.

I unfortunately don't have a steady enough hand/small enough brushes to do much highlighting. I would love some advice, as it seems to be much more necessary with eldar than with the power armor I am used to painting.

I would give the whole figure a wash with a shade like agrax earthshade to add some depth to the model and create shadows. It would be worth thinning the wash a little with lhamaean medium so it is not so harsh when dry. I think this would help your model alot. Using washes is a fantastic way to get a highlighted effect, and I use them all the time. Also maybe go back and re-highlight with the original colour on the most raised edges, as this would really help the model pop more Smile

Thank you, I will give that a shot. WOuld nuln oil or devlan mud work, or are they too dark? Also, I have noticed that I am utterly incapable of doing eyes properly. I think my brush may just be too large. What size brushes do you guys use for such tasks?

I think Nuln oil is a bit too dark, the brown works much better on skin tones, golds and reds that you are using on your model. Devlan mud is absolutely fantastic, and is much better than agrax. I wish GW still made it as I would stock up on loads (Agrax still works fine though). Would def reccomend thinning it with a little lhamaean medium though. It is better to apply multiple thinned washes until you are happy with the effect, than one heavy one that spoils your figure.

I use a widsor and newton series 7 size 00 for fine detail work like eyes, but these are super expensive, and I think the fine detail Gw brush should work pretty well for you. Also paint the eyes white first then add the black dot. Once the shade is applied it should blend nicely. I always use a thinned black wash around the recesses on the eyeballs to create a little shadow when doing them, but this may be unneccesary as the first wash youapply to the whole fig may be enough

Ok, thanks a bunch. So, I don't have any lhamaean, will just using water ruin everything? or will it just be a little different?

No water will be fine. Lhamaean just helps it flow a little better. I would do a test on another model first until you find a consistency you are happy with.

Ok, so here she is after a wash.

I think she looks a little better, thank you for the advice, and I am of course open to more. Keep in mind I tend to like subtler shading rather than the heavy stuff I sometimes see. Also, the way the wash dried makes it look like some of the area around the straps is a little cleaner. Considering how much those probably move around, I am not entirely sure that is a bad thing.

Aye that looks a bit better Smile. I would maybe do one more slightly heavier wash just in the recesses of the model for a final shadow effect. In future Gw does loads of different washes depending on what colour you want to shade. Agrax earthshade is great for gold, nuln oil for metals like siver ect, carribough crimson for your reds, and the flesh tone wash (cant remember its name) for your skin. This will give you a much greater depth to your model once you start

Thanks, that is hugely helpful. Also, I will look at another coat, but it may be that the lighting is just a little funny.

It's reikland fleshshade for nice alive-looking skin Smile and can't forget about seraphim sepia for bone. I love washes so much. Great to see this incarnation of Lelith coming along! I think we always forget about the fact that she's probably proficient with every weapon there ever was. Wyches for the wych queen!

Thanks again, although for the record, I was just using Lelith as the model base as I don't think the character is going to fall to the worship of khorne anytime soon...

So, I see no reason why Eldar could not be infected by the obliterator virus, so here is my first such creation. I still need to finish the head, and then it is off to painting. I will probably just end up using the regular obliterator rules. As for the model, it started as one of the warmachine light myrmadons which I added some greenstuff and dark/Eldar weaponry to.

Also, I have been working on some mandrakes. Since they are basically possessed already, most changes will likely be minor.

Really enjoying the use of the old DE parts on that eldobliteradar. That's what I'm calling it, anyway.

Thanks! I have had a bunch of bits sitting around since 3rd edition. Plus I just picked up a set of old bits from a local shop for pretty cheap.

Well, I have some updates on the first eldobliterator: I painted it. I thought dark blue purple with glowing blue lines would look good. It does. Of course it does, that is what we like to call "in midnight clad." Therefore the next one will probably be white with green mutations to create some more contrast and not scream NIGHT LORD so much. Still, I like how it looks and will be keeping it. All it needs is some gloss varnish for the gems.
