The option to take 6 FA slots for the bare minimum HQ and Troop tax is never bad, it's just that the special rules to accompany it are lacklustre.

I don't really feel the need to run more than 3 FA units so I will rarely, if ever, bother with Realspace Raiders. If I do feel a pressing need for 4+ FA units then I can always run 2 CADs unless I'm severely point limited (in which case I probably won't take 4+FA units).

That was sort of my point, realistically you're looking at 300+ points to take a second CAD just in HQ and Troop tax. If you've already got 3 FA choices, plus the HQ, the troops, and probably some elites and heavy support, taking a second CAD at 1500 to bring a couple of scourge units, some reavers and maybe 1 or 2 razorwings is impractical.

This for example, just couldn't be done with a CAD list.

Well, to be fair, I'd never run that list. What on earth are you taking Splinter Cannons on Scourges for? You're paying 120 extra points for a grand total of 8 extra shots over what you'd have with stock shardcarbines! I'd lose those two units and the Razorwing, so that's 400-odd points to play with, probably enough for 3-4 ObjSec Warrior Squads in ObjSec Venoms (which also replaces the Splinter Scourges firepower quite nicely).

It was just an idea that came out of the discussions I had with someone over the effectiveness of splinter cannon scourges and was really about fielding an army mainly made up of them whilst staying battle forged. The same would apply though for any themed list relying on Reavers, Razorwings etc.

Another issue is that sometime double CAD is not even an option, particularly in tournaments.

It mainly depends on how many troops choices you're taking. If you go for 2 units of warriors in venoms and 2 units of warriors in raiders then that 's 8 units that have Obj Sec (even if they are all fragile), however in my current list I only use 2 units of warriors in venoms, so not only do I have not many Obj Secured units but I'm more likely to want to take extra venoms from the fast attack slot.

At 1500 points I get 1 Venom from Fast Attack and another as a dedicated transport option for my Archon, and manage to keep it CAD, but as the points increase to 1750 quite a few of the options I'm considering forces me to go to the Realspace detachment.

Lastly everything depends on how good you think the Fast Attack units are. I'd give up Obj Sec on a 2 troop units because I think my army is stronger by taking more Fast Attack options. I personally think Razorwings, Scourges, empty Venoms & Beastpacks are all very good, others also add Reavers to that list (normally they don't put Beastpacks in Smile ).

For each person making a choice I think the questions should come in order:
Will having 4+ FA slots make your army more powerful ? If not no point RSR detachment
How many troops have you got and are they likely to survive to make use of their Obj Sec status ?

For me having 2 Beastpacks, 2 Venoms, a Scourge unit and a Razorwing (ihmo) makes my army stronger and I'm more than willing to give up Obj Sec on 10 warriors and 2 Venoms. For others the answer may be the opposite.
