PostSubject: Grotesques and Sslyths in a shared Raider?   Grotesques and Sslyths in a shared Raider? I_icon_minitimeSun Jan 18 2015, 21:02

Hello Commorites

I thought of starting a Dark Eldar army and did some research on the units and army as a whole. As a starter, I think I have a relatively good grasp of the army since I've been browsing thought the forum for some time by now.

One thing I'd really like to have is a court of the Archon and I thought of an interesting way to use Sslyths.

My idea is to put them in a Raider, together with some Grotesques. Grots would be my main assault unit and behind them, Sslyths will shoot with their carbines. If needed, Sslyths could also be transitioned into close combat and even-though they don't have Power from Pain, their stats aren't that bad as well.

I'd probably also stick the Archon with them to increase their leadership and have some more shooting (Blaster). The end result would probably look like this:
6 Grots (maybe with abberations), 3 Sslyth and 1 Archon in a Raider:

Now, I'm not really experienced but have seen several games already and would like to know if this would work out how I'm imagining it.

It wouldn't be a super competitive list, but I don't want to choose bad units either. I also thought that it would provide a nice anchor on the map.

Thoughts? Smile

I'm afraid you can't put multiple units in one raider.

That being said, grotesque from the coven book become fearless on turn 2 negating most of their leadership problems. (Or stick a haemy in there). Or you can use your archon with the grots and take a lhamean to give a little leadership to your sslyth.

The way you want to use them works just as well by just taking two raiders.

You can't put two different units in one single Transport Smile

you cant mix the grotesques with sslyth and the grotesqueis they are bulky so you only can put 5 of them in a raider

Not only can you not put multiple units in a single transport, but even if you could, you wouldn't be able to do what you propose anyway as Grots are bulky, requiring 2 transport slots per model.

@The Strange Dark One - you may not have realized this, but it is my understanding that you cannot put multiple non IC units into a single Raider. Wink

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet ( Laughing ), but you can't put two different units in the same transport.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the issue with bulky models!

Hey don't feel bad Strange Dark One.

Everyone here has made mistakes when trying out a new army they have no previous experience with.

This is actually one of the very few 40k forums where we don't constantly abuse, insult and endlessly argue with each other!

Stick with it mate! Smile

Well, what should I say, I asked an honest question and received several honest answers xD
I do feel kinda dumb, though.

Perhaps, this is what makes them the "lesser races"?
Excuse me my phraseology, I just finished Path of the Archon Wink

@Thor, so ICs are fine? That's interesting.
That being said a Raider for some Grots and a Venom for the Sslyth and the Archon should be fine, right?

Either way main question actually still remains. Could I get some more opinions if this sounds like a valid unit choice of units?
Tbh, I don't want to buy expensive court models just to realize that they are of no true use after all.

Yes - an IC basically becomes "part" of the unit he joins, and thus circumvents the rules for '1 unit' in a Raider/Venom. Heck, you could functionally have a 5 man Sslyth unit joined by a Haem, an Archon,0 a Succubus, and an Allied Autarch all in 1 Raider (I do not advocate this unit - fyi)

I would probably put the Archon in with the Grots, as Grots benefit quite a bit from an attached IC's leadership boost (honestly I'd also tend to make it a Succubus...) and then would add a Lhamean to 4 Sslyth, again, for the leadership. But, yes, at the end of the day, those would both be valid placements of the units.

Sslyth are a good unit - I personally think their only weakness is that Grots exist, and Grots basically do what Sslyth do except they do it better. The advantage of Sslyth is that they do have shooting so can opt to stay away from things and work a bit better as a Deep Strike unit as they can have a round of shooting when they arrive (as opposed to the Grot method of 'stand there and grunt'). Also, Sslyth don't require an attached IC like Grots tend to, so can get away with just adding in the Lhamean and calling it a day.

I basically agree with what Thor said. However, a couple of bonuses with regard to Sslyth:

- They don't require a supplement/formation to get the best value out of them - whereas Grots taken from the main DE book don't benefit from most of the pfp table.

- They don't take up an Elite slot (of course, they do take up an HQ slot if you're not using an Archon). This only really matters if you use a lot of elites, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

I'd replace one Sslyth with a Medusae though. The unit would still have Toughness 5 from three Sslyth, and there's almost always a use for a flamer.

Especially with AP3 and another flamer gone with 7th...
