Hi all - first can I start off by saying I've seen the grotesque alternative models threads and am aware of all the usual suspects.

I'm after a very specific look here though, so was hoping some of you with a wider knowledge of alternative model sources might be able to help.

What I'm looking for is to create a unit of grotesques (so far so 'normal'). My plan however is to try and tie them in to the rest of my coven models by having them wearing capes/cloaks etc very much like the haemonculus model and the wrack models. I don't want them to look like they're moving particularly quickly (I'm already working on some crypt horror conversions that cover that side of grotesques) so i'm really looking for something that meets the following criteria.
a) Bigger than Wracks (obviously)
b) very solid/muscular (obviously)
c) posed so as to be moving slowly or not at all (how many horror movie villains have you ever seen running?)
d) preferably clothed with aprons/cloaks etc so that I don't have to test my green stuff skills beyond their limits trying to sculpt some on.

In terms of the pose, the warspears are probably the closest of the common alternatives because they're quite static.

My first thought are Warhammer Ogres. You would need to sculpt cloaks on them, but they do have the right size and poses.

Ogres may be a good option. Maybe one of the various minotaur or even doombull models may work (i've converted a doombull into a rat ogre bonebreaker, so a grotesque couldn't be too farfetched.)

I don't know if you are limiting yourself to GW models or not but the Mantic line of ogres may fit your purposes.  They only have 3 poses I believe but they are all sort of awkwardly shuffling stance.  They don't have robes or aprons exactly, a combination of straps and spiked leather/metal sheets over their bodies.  I tend to use large capes around the waist of models to flesh out robes, I don't know if they'd work on these guys though because of the size.

Here is a size comparison - the mantic one is in the center while the GW model is on the left.

As you can see they are much more streamline ogre kingdom type ogres.  Their posture also makes them look kind of unsure, which I like considering their leadership.

You can pick them up on ebay for $1-2 a piece if you are patient.

Edit: forgot to mention that talos masks fit pretty well over the neck stub where their stock heads are supposed to go.

Ogres really seem your best bet, and I would really say that even if your green stuff skills aren;t amazing, cloaks/coats can be accomplished fairly easily.

I'm going to point you at the coat I did for this Eldar guy as an example.
All you have to do is press the green stuff down flat, then cut out a shape and lay it over the models back. Do thin strips down the sixes, and the once dry smooth the gaps between the pieces with green stuff.
Its easy to do.

Of course your other option is to remember the concept of scale.

40k is about 1/48, so something in 1/32 would be about the right size.
