This past weekend I participated in a tournament at my FLGS. There were 20 people for 3 rounds of 1,850 points of fun. The "fluff" is essentially that each army is landing on a planet to get "bullets, bandages and beans". As food is the most important and this planet has giant turkeys the size of a carnifex, well ....
The tournament used a slightly non-standard format. The primary objective in all 3 games was to kill 3 of the 4 "turkey's" on the board. The turkey's were essentially fearless beasts with hit & run. The stats were WS 4, BS-, S5, T6, I5, W6, LD8, 4++. Getting the most turkey's would net you a cool 6 VP.
In other words - perfect for poison.
Secondary objectives were Kill Points - worth 4VP.
Tertiary (each worth 1VP) were First Blood, Linebreaker, Warlord and an interesting one called Last Laugh which is scored by the last person to completely kill a unit.
Game 1 would feature night fighting for the entire game. Game 2 had night fighting round 1. Game 3 left night fighting up to standard rules.
If you only read one of these skip down to game 3. Otherwise, enjoy.
-------------------------------------------------------------
The list I took was built first and foremost for clearing as many turkeys as I could T1. So, poison galore:
Succubus w/archite
4 Incubi
Venom w/SC
4 units of 10 Warriors w/Raider NS dissies
1 unit of 5 warriors - walking
3 units of 6 Reavers w/Caltrops
3 units of 5 scourges w/4 SC*
1 Ravager with Dissies
*note: As you'll see, I really wish I had outfit my scourges with blasters instead of splinter cannons.
---------------------------------------
Game 1My opponent was a mechanized ork player who also managed to completely fail at producing an actual written list. grr. Apparently it was "left at home". However I decided to be friendly and not to have the TO bounce him out.
He took:
Warlord on a bike with 9 other bike friends
1 Gorkanauts
1 Morkanaut
2 Deff Dreads
a battlewagon full of boyz
Some meganobz
a random warboss on another bike
I won the right to go first. I deployed 2 units of raiders w/warriors next to 1 turkey, 2 units next to another and my bikes to the left side ready to take one of his turkeys. I reserved my succubus and her group plus all the scourges.
T1: I got both of my turkeys in shooting and killed a couple ork bikes. He..failed to do anything. (I should note that my dice were absolutely on fire the whole tournament).
T2: I picked up the third turkey, while my succubus and 1 unit of scourges came in. 2 units of scourges mishapped and were destroyed! I went on to clear most of the rest of the bikes. He..killed a couple bikes.
T3: I cleared every one of his bikes off the table plus the meganobz. His battlewagon finally got close enough to one of my raiders to assault it - which died and only took 3 warriors with it. At this point the game was pretty much over. I had primary, first blood, warlord and line breaker (9 pts). The only thing he could do was secondary and possibly get last laugh for a max of 5 pts.
T4: I cleared those boyz, hid my warlord and baited him with warriors to keep his mind off my warlord. He killed a few raiders and another bike unit.
T5: I stayed hidden, he killed another unit and got last laugh.
Game ended DE victory 9 to 5.

Game 2Blood Angels
Like the first guy, this one also failed to produce a written list. *sigh*, what is wrong with people?
He took:
Astorath the Grim w/6(?) terminators
Lemartes w/ 5 jump troops
Death Company Dreadnought (I think he was named character but not 100% sure)
Stormraven
Razorback w/5 guys inside
Landraider w/5 more terminators inside
I'm not exactly happy with this game for the simple reason that I *knew* he was not playing the flyer rules right yet I didn't try to stop him. He won the roll off to go first and it was Dawn of War deployment.
T1: He shot the turkeys on his side and only did a few wounds. I shot the two on my side off the table and moved my bikes up to get close to the ones on his side hoping to take them T2. I also made a critical mistake as I should have turbo boosted two groups of bikes up to at least bubble wrap one of those turkeys.
T2: He assaulted both turkeys on his side, killing both and got first blood by taking out one of my raiders. I killed most of the terminators that were outside the land raider (he absolutely didn't believe what caltrops could do when I pulled off 6 rending HoW attacks - so I pulled my book out to show him) and turbo boosted one group of bikes into a corner to secure line breaker. Nothing came in off reserves.
T3: The stormraven shows up and here's the part I'm mad about. He brings it on and pivots at the end of his move so he can target a group of bikes. He does a few wounds. All my reserves come in and I drop 3 units of scourges near his HQ. They kill most of the terminators guarding Astorath
T4: He joins Astorath to the jump troop group. He also pivots the storm raven at the start of his move, moves it and pivots it again. It is sitting 3" away from my HQ venom - which due to the 45 degree cone should be impossible to hit it. But he does and kills the venom. The dreadnought assaults one group of my scourges. Fortunately they hold.
T5: At this point I have very few options. He has primary, secondary, first blood and line breaker. I have ... line breaker. His stormraven backs up 1" (hover mode). It takes the stormraven, razorback and landraider to finlly kill my incubi and succubus. I take the rest of the terminators, lemartes and the jump troops out. This leaves astorath.
Somehow we rolled (and had time for) for a T6 AND T7. I did take out Astorath. However I only have 6 KP and he has 7 which means he gets the secondary.
Final score was 13 to 3, as I got last last laugh...

Game 3Imperial Knights with Space Marine allies.
This was a grudge match. My 12 year old son was playing Space puppies in this tournament ( his first one) and played this opponent on a table behind me for Game 2. The opponent spent most of the game badgering him and generally being TFG. I have to give kuddos to my son for trying to stand up for himself only to have victory snatched due to time being called before he could start his turn 4 - even though his opponent got theirs and "scored" those points. This was also the first time I've ever played against knights.
So, papa bear came out.
She did have a printed list (yeah!)
3 Imperial Knights
2 units of scouts (and I swear Telion was in both of them)
1 SM librarian conclave
She won the roll off and I failed to seize. We had dawn of war deployment.
T1: She split her shots from the 3 knights amongst all 4 turkeys. That with the shooting from her scouts netted her around 3 W caused.. Did I say my dice were hot? I killed the two turkeys on my side and turbo boosted two groups of bikes up to a turkey on hers. Learning from my mistake in my prior game, I bubbled wrapped it to ensure the knights couldn't get close. Note that it took her 45 minutes to complete her T1.. It took me less than 10.
T2: She split her shots again and managed to kill a raider (first blood) and killed a turkey. My warlord trait let me reroll reserves, so I somehow managed to keep everything still in reserve. In the meantime I killed the librarian conclave and most of one of the scout units. I failed to get the third turkey though...but my bike units still had it wrapped up. Again, it took her 45 minutes to my 10 for the round.
T3: This is where it got interesting. She assaulted the bikes with her knights. Her hammer of wrath killed a couple bikes that were locked in combat with the 3rd turkey. This gave her a clear path for piling in at her initiative step to grab the last W off the final turkey. HOWEVER, my bikes are init 6 and go before her. So I declared my attacks to be against the turkey and she threw a fit claiming that because it was her turn I had to attack her knights. I calmly pointed out that I can attack whatever I'm in base contact with and the turkey is the only thing my bikes from that combat were touching. 10 minutes later we were able to get the TO to come over. I let her explain the situation and he agreed with me on how it works. At this point we have less than 20 minutes to finish the game before time is called and I absolutely have to bring in my warlord from reserves so it doesn't count as destroyed. What does she do? Went to the bathroom for another 5 minutes. I wouldn't want to flat out say she was intentionally slow playing but, well...
I should probably mention that due to scoring being based on total points scored during the tournament, she was sitting at
#1 prior to this game starting. *evil grin*
So, I waited. Finally she came out so we could finish the assault and ... my bikes killed the turkey. Netting me primary.
I take my T3. All my reserves come in. My scourges surround the final scout unit (landing perfectly), my remaining Reavers are well hidden in her deployment zone, my warlord is unable to be seen by anything. I clear the scouts and get last laugh.
At this point the game is 8 to 5. I have primary, line breaker and last laugh. She has secondary plus first blood.
There is now 10 minutes left before dice down. She starts to take her T4 and I stop her. I say "Wait, there is absolutely no way you are going to finish your shooting phase, much less your entire turn, before time is called. So, I'm not willing to play this round unless I am able to get my turn as well. This needs to end here." She called the TO over again. He looked at the table and asked what round we were starting. When she said 4, he laughed and said no, it's over.
So I not only won this game for a tournament total of 2 wins 1 loss against heavy armor opponents while fielding only poison BUT I was the tournament spoiler by being personally responsible for knocking out the top ranked player at the last game.
Best game ever.
