Granted, but I think some people might be reluctant to have their actual names attached to it.

For me it is less the issue of having my name attached to the letter and more my name attached to anything online. Call me paranoid, but one of my sybarites is going to stab me in the back the first chance he gets, no matter how I shower him with favours!

In these modern times, if you are any kind of visible professional, or are hoping to be, it is very reasonable to not want to have your real name affiliated with the torture loving bdsm space elves forum with the big skull, knives and drugs, even if you fully and completely support the letter. Because not everyone plays 40k. There's unfortunately even more ridiculous things like where I live (a big city) I've heard of landlords pre-emptively googling would-be tenants to find background information etc.

Glad that using your real name was kept voluntary. Any reasonable employee in the receiving end will understand this concern anyway... and to me it is also fun the letter is signed by, say, Count Adhemar of the Dark City rather than John from Liverpool. It's a fan letter after all.  And John has 0 posts here.
