| Howdy y'all. My friends and I are thinking of doing a small power level tourney in a month with a special twist. Also, I apologize in advance for the multiple posts in a row, just thought it would make things a lot easier for anyone trying to "quote" a part of a post instead of deleting 90% of the stuff there. - *NOTE*:
This is just for fun, maybe it could be used in the future, but if you find something to be dumb, please give your reasoning and balance rationale instead of hating on Power Levels.
Also, @Mods, If I'm not allowed to share Index Power Levels, despite them being easily found on 3++, just send me a PM and I'll fix that. Thank you!
- Base Power Level:
Rationale: The Developer FAQ stated that Power Levels are indicative of a unit's average weapon loadout. Thus special weapon teams, ranging from powerful anti-tank weapons to just basic guns have a wide variety of possible Power Levels, with their actual PL being somewhere in the middle, thus being non cost effective with no upgrades, and undercosted with the best upgrades. My Power Level conversions are an attempt at fixing this.
Units power levels are reduced to their "base" state. Example: Kabalites are worth 3 PL, while Trueborn are 5 PL in the Index. Trueborn have +1 attack but lose objective secured and are restricted to the "Elite" slot. Thusly, their base PL is also 3 PL for 5 models. However, their weapon upgrades increase their PL. A Pair of Shredders and their Dracon upgrades will be a +1PL, while taking 2 Dark Lances will give them a +2 PL, since they can be protected in whatever transport they're in, and by 3 spare bodies. Thus, taking 4 in a squad makes it easier to lose Dark Lances, which is why 4 DL's are only +3 PL
- Balance?:
I'm trying to keep the overall balance the same as it currently is, even with our codex coming out in a couple of months. So for the majority of units and upgrades, the rough estimate of 20 points = 1 Power Level still holds. There are a couple of cases where this is different, namely Coven. I won't be using Coven at all in the friendly tourney, just completed them for the sake of completeness. Grotesques are bad. Straight up. The reason for this being, they cost 2 PL per model. for 40 points, you're not getting very much, 30 pts per model or 3 PL per pair seems like a fair enough trade. Also, all weapons or model count rules still hold true, even if they're not directly stated.
- The Twist:
So since all I've done is basically turned points into PL, I really haven't done all that much. I've just divided all the points by 20. Hence why 2,000 pts lists are roughly 100 PL.
Anyways, my friends and I play Drukhari, Chaos+Chaos Daemons, Necrons, Tyranids and T'au. If I bring a bunch of Darklances to fight against Big Daemons or Battlesuits, I'm going to be in trouble against my Tyranid friend's massive swarm of nids. Thus, we were thinking of doing roughly 75 PL battles, where 15-20 of the PL's are invested into upgrades. (Those numbers aren't set in stone, just using them as an example). We were thinking of making the rules, so that each army keeps the same units, but is able to switch around the Power Level upgrades. So if I bring 4 Darklances on my trueborn in a venom, Costing 3 PL, in the next battle, I can choose to use 2 PL to give them Splinter Cannons, and use that extra 1 PL upgrade somewhere else, whether its a Dissie on a raider, a blaster and Sybarite upgrade on my Kabs, you name it.
Thanks for giving it a read! I'll post not only my Spreadsheet I made, but I'll make separate posts for each section of our units as well. Spreadsheet | |

| I'm going to guess you mean 4 blasters on the Trueborn and not 4 dark lances as I don't think Trueborn have ever been able to equip 4 Dark lances but otherwise this is an interesting idea. | |

| yeah, that’s what I get for copy pasting the scourge weapon options. let me fix that... They can either take 2 Splinter Cannons/Dark Lances, or 4 Shredders/Blasters Also, if anyone was wondering about why some of the PL averages get lower for larger units, I'm doing it based on the way leadership works this edition. What I mean by that, is the fact that with Leadership 10, the best Necron warrior squad size is actually 15, instead of 20 (Command Points aside). With 10 leadership, Necrons seem like they won't lose models very often to "running away" The problem arises when more than 10 of their models get killed in a single player turn. Each model past 10 that dies, means that another dies to morale. So if 15 out of 20 necron warriors die in a single player turn, the necron player will lose (15 dead - 10 leadership + 1d6 dice roll) = 5 + 1d6 models. The enemy only needs to kill 15 models to destroy the unit. So if 15 are going to die anyway, better to bring 15 in a squad instead of 20. So I'm applying the same logic to any of our squads that can go above our avg leadership of 8/9. Hellions, Wyches, Bloodbrides and beast packs(not Clawed Fiends) all suffer from this, so they get some lee-way. | |
