<A model can fire a Pistol even if there are enemy units within 1" of its own unit, but it must target the closest enemy unit.>

Does pistols always have to shoot at the closest enemy unit, or does this only apply if you're within 1" of an enemy unit?

A Pistol must always target the closest enemy.

I've always thought that you have to shoot the closest enemy if you're within 1" but can otherwise choose your target normally but reading the rule again I think you're technically right. No idea if that is the intent though as it's an awkwardly phrased rule.

I disagree with the reading.

<A model CAN fire a Pistol even if there are enemy units within 1" of its own unit, but it must target the closest enemy unit.>

It's a rule that allow you to do something you're not supposed to, under certain conditions. But if you use your weapon normally, the restriction applied to the specific rule doesn't apply.

I'm unsure myself, if the wording was <...but if so it must target the closest enemy unit> then it would be clear it only applied to this spesific exception. As it is now it is really unclear and could be one or both.

If it has had a dot between the 2 parts, I would agree. But with a comma, the second part of the sentence is linked to the first.

In the splintermind podcast they discuss the spirit sting combo with "ANESOTERIC KILL, DELIVERED FROM AFAR" and conclude it's useless since pistols anyway have to target the closest unit. I guess people are not sure which way this swings.

You can shoot anything you want.

A model can fire a Pistol even if there are
enemy units within 1" of its own unit, but
it must target the closest enemy unit. In
such circumstances, the model can shoot
its Pistol even if other friendly units are
within 1" of the same enemy unit.

This section is only for if you are within 1", you can fire like normal if you our out of range of 1"
