The GW app is available today. Unfortunately, the army builder part of it is not yet ready. I am curious about it, but I suspect that it will be disappointing.
From everything I have read, you are spot on. Prepare for disappointment.

The main rulebook can be bought. But we are supposed to use "the old codexes" until our new ones drop. Only the old codexes have the old points, and dont mention blast weapons. The FAQ covers some of that, but not all of it. As it is, with the exception of the Primis box, literally everything is unplayable (officially). I just cant believe thats right.

I mean, over on the battlescribe subreddit, the chatter seems to be that they will update when the points officially drop for everyone. Hence my desire to know when we get the updated army rules. The github repository for the Drukhari catalogue suggests they are nearly ready to push it out, they are just waiting for the official release.

Chapter Approved is also dropping that has all of the updated points in there. So nothing is unplayable, you have to buy that book with the updated points in it.

You can only be disapointed if you think the app will NOT be garbage. :-) https://www.goonhammer.com/the-goonhammer-review-warhammer-40000-the-app/ GW delivers according to expectations. I just can't stop laughing about the fact that they think people will pay for this.

Only problem is, I am pretty sure there will still a be a ton of people who will use the app in pay mode for the army builder. Because it is an expansive hobby anyway so I can see a lot of people just saying "well these eg. 5 Euro a month don't hurt that bad".
Also the store managers will push that app heavily on beginning players, where a good portion won't know about stuff like battlescribe.

I can't tell if this is funny or sad. The only good page in the app seems to be the one that copies the design of Wahapedia.
In all seriousness, the app looks badly rushed. A lack of filtering and obvious bugs make it clear that there was minimal time for Q&A and "quality of life" featres. I can only imagine that GW got scared big time by Covid-19. And maybe feared that their distribution model is not sustainable under such a crisis?
They would have had years to work on an app that could be released along with 9th edition. Instead, we are getting a rushed mess. Thanks GeeDubs, I'll stick to my excel sheet with points cost, stats and rules.
'Hey, valued customers! How would you like a version of Battlescribe that you have to pay a subscription fee for, which doesn't actually have an army-builder feature yet, and with the user interface scaled back to -97?'
Stay the course, GW. Stay the course.
That hilarity aside, I'm curious as to whether anyone intends to use Eldar or Harlequin allies in 9th edition? Do you think they can be made to work, or is the penalty for taking them just too great?

I've been contemplating mixing Harlequinns and Covens. I think CWE are best used as mono lists. Also wasn't there supposedly a CP tax when you build a list from multiple books?
Just got another game of 9th in, and I remain shocked by just how bonkers good DT Talos with twin-liquifiers are. I had 2 squads of 2 with liquifiers and haywire and they just wreck everything.
Got charged by blood claws and wiped them with overwatch. Terminators were in my back lines so I shot the hell out of them with 1 squad then killed the last 2 in combat. The other squad moved into range of a dreadnought and didn't even fire their haywire, because the liquifiers killed it (which is only a little above average). Then they got charged by another dread, overwatched, and brought it down to 1 wound. 1 Talos died, the other killed the dread.
Hordes, primaris, vehicles, it really doesn't matter. Twin-liquifiers are absolutely brutal against all of them. It may be early, but I think Talos are point-for-point the best unit in our codex. I don't know what #2 is, but it feels like it's a distant 2nd.

Mono-Eldar is understandable.
I guess I'm mostly curious about Harlequins because towards the end of 8th I started a project that involved converting various models for a themed DE/Ynnari-Harlequin army. I'm now wondering if I wasted my time, lol.

I'd assumed that the CP tax was for taking additional detachments, but it's possible there's an additional cost on top of that.

Had my first "real" game of 9th last weekend, and I was very unimpressed with my Reavers with ToS. It seems like the larger vehicles/monsters will be taking flamers going forward, which really put the hurt on T4/5 Reavers. Surprisingly Venom warriors (with Blaster and Blast Pistol) did the best, scoring objectives and pushing infantry off of other points. Starting to think that the Wych Cults will be staying home in future matches.

Quins are in a great spot right now, if you took troupes with 5 weapons it only went up 5 or 10pts depending on if its melee or FP's, characters went up 5pts so not bad, starweavers went up nothing, and Bikes went up 10pts which is the biggest change, but honestly thats 100% fine and still are 100% playable to bring 6-18 (it was where their points started actually).

Yes, it does seem like it. I'm just perplexed because it was communicated differently. But I guess that was to be expected?
I think a Coven Batallion + Harlequinn Partol sounds like a sweet deal. I need to tweak some numbers, in theory you had the same CP if you took 2 Coven Patrols + 1 Kabal Partol + 1 Clown Patrol. But that seems to stretch everything very thin.

I think the Harlequin Vanguard still might have some legs to it as an allied detachment. It's a huge hit in terms of command points now, especially if you want to get them fully loaded up, but it's also only about 300 points for four extremely nasty characters.
