I've also heard people suggest Blighted Ogrun Warspears from Hordes.
Of course, it also depends on your theme. You could, for example, have a snake-themed army and convert those Daughters of Khaine snake/Medusae creatures (Blood Sisters?) into Grotesques.

Sounds like an idea. If you're looking for inspiration, you can also click the link in my signature. It has (amongst some of my other models) pictures of my Grotesques, converted from AoS Crypt Horrors with some Talos masks and gauntlets and other random bits. And for the "Monstrous Cleavers" I used cheap keychains in the shape of populair weapons from series/movies and such. In this case, one from Final Fantasy VII, one from Naruto, and one from Thor in the MCU. If I make another one, I'll probably use some weapon from LotR or something.

I converted a bunch from the CWE Wraithblade models.
You get 5 in a pack, and there is already fluff around Vect tinkering Wraith units to become his "Castigators" in the Path of the Dark Eldar novels

I have been running grots in every game in a 6 man unit on foot with liquifiers and they have proven one of my favorite units. I run coven of 12 for the extra ap on the flesh gauntlets (which makes them +1s, -1 ap, which is a huge deal for the unit's killing power) next to a cronos. The biggest thing that has makes them worthwhile is to use the liquefiers to clear a chaf unit (6d6 shots is usually enough to kill 4 marines) and then use an early game CP to give them the crons buff to max their power from pain. the extra +5 invul is huge if you can get it on turn 1-2. From there I use them to push the center and bully units off of an objective. This combined with the full re-rolls from torchers craft on wound rolls I sometimes spend the CP to fish for mortals by re-rolling any wound rolls that are not a 6.
This is my test model for the unit I just got, I may be weird but I like the fine cast models)

I have not had much success with Liquifier Grots after Dark Technomancers got the nerf bat. What kind of Meta are you playing in?
Giving up an extra attack, and your access to flat D2 weapons is a hefty price to pay for a Damage 1 AP2 flamer that can go on your basic troops IMHO.
But the meta is currently putting a lot of value into -1 damage mechanics, and its not like we dont have lots of Damage 2 options throughout the codex.
FWIW, I am currently painting up 5 more Grots for my Coven

My most common opponents are Grey knights, custodies and a very tank heavy guard player, with the best success against grey knights.
I use them as a later commitment unit, ideally keeping them in a staging area till turn 2-3, after they have been buffed by the Cronos. I can agree that not taking the -3 ap 2 damage cleaver (due to coven) is something i miss. However I feel that incubi are a better source of damage 2 and 3 attacks.
The decision to go for liquifiers helps provide 3 benefits: powerful chaff clearing in a unit that you want to see in combat the ability to get a +5 invul much earlier than expected an deadly prospect to an incoming charge with the between 4-6 d6 overwatch
I do think it is a list building choice on my part as it plays into the big part they play in my battle plan, a big bully unit capable of taking on the center of the board.
the list I usually play is archon succubus heamonclus
6 grots w/liq 5 incubi 5 mandrake 5 court (4 sslyth, 1 lamean) raider w dark lance
10 warrior w 2 blasters, phasam raider w dissie and rack
5 Wracks
5 Wracks
10 hamoxites w 2 ossofactors and hex
5 brides venom
3 birds
3 birds
beastmaster
2 talos with gauntlet, inject, heat
1 cronos
5 scourge w/blasters
i use poison tongue, red grief and coven of 12

Its a 2k list, comes out to 1995 exactly. The big play of the list is to use the coven elements of the list to bully the center and then move into one of my opponents table quarters after securing the center.
commonly used strats: athletic airiest(red greif), torturer's craft , potent metalotoxins, swift outflank and murderous decent
Here is the specific list ++ Battalion Detachment 0CP (Aeldari - Drukhari) [110 PL, 9CP, 1,995pts] ++
Obsession: Cult of the Red Grief: The Speed of The Kill, Kabal of the Poisoned Tongue: The Serpent's Kiss, Realspace Raid, The Coven of Twelve: Butchers of Flesh
+ Stratagems + Stratagem: Alliance of Agony [-1CP] Stratagem: Prizes from the Dark City [-1CP] Stratagem: Prizes from the Dark City [-1CP]
Scourges [5 PL, 100pts] . Scourge with Special / Heavy weapon: Blaster . Scourge with Special / Heavy weapon: Blaster . Scourge with Special / Heavy weapon: Blaster . Scourge with Special / Heavy weapon: Blaster . Solarite: Shardcarbine
