I'm not sure, if you missed it, but there are actually two downsides to this.
1. You can only use one grenade in the shooting phase, so it is neither reliable, nor powerful.
2. The grenades only have a range of 8", which is rather short to reliably take out tanks.
I guess it works as a backup plan, if you want to play anti-infantry Trueborn, but want to have an option to hurt tanks at all.
