| Here's what happened: I disembark from raider with Duke Sliscus, a Haemonculus and 8 Trueborn. 2 Trueborn have splinter cannons and 6 have shardcarbines. I fire on his 8 space wolves, one is a runepriest in runic armor (2+ armor save like terminator armor). The problem is his priest is out front and according to the rules, wounds have to go to closest enemy (until he's dead?). I had 26 shots, an amazing 23 hits, but only 13 wounds (despite Sliscus' 3+ poison). He starts rolling one dice at a time for each wound, going at that stinking priest. He rolled 10 of 13 dice before rolling a 1! Then he does a "lookout sir", passes it, which kills a regular guy in power armor(3+ sv). All that to kill 1 regular space wolf, no wound on the priest. Did we do it wrong? and if not, how do I get around it? I was pissed, furious. Those rules just don't seem right!
Oh, he was in the open, so my understanding is "focus fire" couldn't have helped either
Unlike a lot of the bigger 40k sites we try to avoid double posts (Archons' are after all natural control freaks), so in future could you please use the edit button. Thanks. - Mush (your Malevolent Moderator)

| rulebook is not in front of me atm, but afaik you allocate the wound for a lookout sir prior to rolling the save. I believe this was FAQ'd to be the closest available model.
So, you did a wound to the priest, but other than that yeah, 2+ is gross.
Something to be said for a blaster in that squad......

| You LoS the closest model...which it's entirely possible the closest model to the priest was a basic guy. From the way it sounds he didn't do anything wrong. You did though Next time, position the raider/disembarking squad so that the priest isn't the closest model. Also, being this unit had the duke in it I take it you charged afterward? Just wait till your mate figures out he can put those rune priest in a big blob squad...so he can go to ground and then get back in the fight, and give the squad ATSKNF. | |

| The lesson I learned was at least on blaster in a warrior/trueborn squad (prefer multiple), and MANOUVER around priest with the vehicle before disembarking. That rule just seems SO WRONG though. In real combat the whole squad isn't trying to ding just one guy.......oh, this is a game, not the real deal.....lol. | |

| You can't LOS after failing a save, not entirely sure if that's what you were implying happened or not. Best to position yourself to have the normal guys closest whenever possible | |

So much better than before though, where I could run 9 ork nobs, a boss, and a painboy; have all different wargear throughout the squad and allocate one wound to each (dont forget feel no pain) before I lost a model.... A trick the Greyknights learned from the greenskins! Like everyone has said though, dont fight fair! Flank the squad in question, if you must go head on use the Disintegrator or lance on the raider first to pound the Ap2 out front, or make sure the Duke is within 6" to use his blast pistol on the 2+, remember you choose the order your opponent takes the saves in.

| You don't Look Out Sir after his model has failed a save. When he has a wound to allocate he can do 1 of 2 things; roll the armour save of that model or roll a Look Out Sir, that MUST go on the closest model, who then takes the save. The Rune Preist lost a wound.
You're friend made a mistake there. It as FAQd so the wording in the rulebook is outdated.
You can avoid it by being more mobile. Make a note of where the 2+ armour save guy is a fly to the side of the squad OR hit him with AP2, like Trueborn Blasters.
What was the rest of your army list? Why do you have a Haemie in the unit? FnP?

| what was his list like?, i haven't come across a puppy army yet to get close enough to hurt me. mass of fire against them bring them down eventually. the only spam to worry bout that ive seen is razorback spam, lascannon and twin linked plasma gun but this is rare. other then that they gotta come to you (except the LF) but all marines have devestators) 1++ has cleared up the LoS issue certainly if their is a pesky 2+ in front use the raiders dissie or DL, i take the dissie every time as a 1 shot ap2 weapon for me always misses lol. | |

| As others have said you do LOS before rolling saves, but I wanted to point out that having a blaster of firing the raider is not a good solution as the priest can LOS the ap2 shots but take all the poison shots. Best tactic is to use mobility to avoid the priest being the closest.
After your lances are done with tanks feel fine throwing ravagers or blksterborn at the squad. Your opponent may not be so ready to put the priest at the front after he rolls his first 1 for LOS against a blaster or lance.

| Thanks for all the help guys! Great advise here. I hadn't played 40K since 3rd Ed, so a lot is brand new. My MOST regular opponent has Space Wolves. He owns 3 drop pods, so 2 are in my d-zone on turn 1. He sends in 1 with 5 terminators and the other has either a dreadnought or that grey hunter squad with priest. It's a pain every game. I love the "fluff" on many of our characters, especially Sliscus and Sathonyx; so I try building a fun, balanced, yet fluffy army. I own 4 raiders (3 are built) and 2 ravagers, 12 bikes, 10 hellions, 10 wracks, 15 Scourges, 8 Incubi and lots of warriors and wyches. What I don't have is: Grotesques, Harlequins, court of Archon, zero flyers. Many are the old models from way back. I'll get back to you all after my next game, 12/26/12, with results of lessons learned here. Figures....my buddy is bringing his Tau army instead of space wolves, so this'll be another brand new experience. Tau didn't even exist in 3rd ed as far as I remember...LOL Just merged another one of your double posts. Please use the edit button in future. Thanks. - Mush | |

| Most advice that we can give is basically to kill anything with a markerlight; and get into close combat asap. dark lances and blasters to Instant death any of the battlesuits and shoot the kroot then charge them too.
