Magnetic Carrying Case finished! Empty
PostSubject: Magnetic Carrying Case finished!    Magnetic Carrying Case finished! I_icon_minitimeSun Feb 10 2013, 20:55

There was a thread a while back where I asked about magnetizing flying bases here , because I was building a magnetic carrying case for my figures. Now after a long long time I got all the materials, magnets and some time to actually finish the project and... well... I finally made it. The magnetic carrying case deluxe complete with internal lighting and space for books, tape measure and dice is DONE!

I went with a soft self adhesive LED strip (2m long, warm white colour) that had a separate power plug. This is absolutely essential as that means I can glue the part attached to the actual LED in place and have the power supply separate. That way I don't have to run the cable out of the open door which is so elegant.

For my vehicles I didn't use magnetic sheet, it was not strong enough for my tastes. Instead I glued 2-3 4x2mm neodymium magnets flat below the bases of my skimmers and flyers. Works out alright. You can put them upside down and shake them without breaking off. The only thing I'm still worried about is whether the balljoints (default ones by GW) will hold. Maybe I have to do some experiments and magnetize them as well. Problem is there's a lot of momentum because of the size of the vehicles and there only being space for a single flat magnet. Time will tell I guess.

As for the pictures: they're a bit blurry, but you get the idea. And yes, those close ups of the trays are actually upside down.

I can do a tutorial if you like.

Here are some pics:

And finally all my other stuff... which still fits nicely inside that case all at once. 6 floors total.

Hope you like it. Cheers!

Very nice work. Looks a bit big for travel but a very nice means of storage.

Really impressive, it does indeed seem a bit big, are the ball joints glued in? Can it be turned upside down etc?

Really great idea and execution, especially for fragile Dark Eldar Models that don't travel well in foam.

The whole thing is indeed quite big and heavy, but it still fits nicely in the trunk of a regular car - for comparison let's say a Volkswagen Golf, with a bit of luck even a smaller car.

Biggest plus of this case is this: It has wheels and a handle on top you can easily roll it.

The whole thing, as well as every floor separately can be turned upside down and shaken without anything falling off. The balljoints below the vehicles are NOT glued. They might need glueing or a magnet though once they start to get loose.

The magnets are 4mmx2mm round Neodym N45 magnets. 1 below each infantry base and no more than 3 for any vehicle short of a Stormraven.

If I were to build a case like that again I'd probably do a few things different, but with the materials I had available this was the cheapest and most effective way to do it. If you like to invest a bit more money you could easily get better results.

total cost (magnets not included) approx. 30- 40 EUR
Please note though that this only is for metal sheets, wood, LEDs, glue and screws. This price does not include the case itself (I found it in the cellar).

Cheers

Edit: Rough estimation as to how much fits into this case: around 3k points worth of DE, probably more with armies that have fewer spikey bits. Also, you don't have to disassemble your models to put them in.
Edit edit: Put everything I have (fits on 2 floors) in online codex and tripled it. It holds more like 4-5k points. Plus books, dice and templates.
