| This competition has ended, for results Click HereThe Fluff- Spoiler:
She walked through the ancient library slowly, the guttering, green, light from the copper torch in her hand casting weird dancing shadows along her path. She knew the answer she wanted would be down here, somewhere, she simply had to find it. The shelves loomed over her, each of them stretching to the ceiling over a hundred feet above her head. Each of the dark wood shelves was lined with rows of dusty tomes, claimed from a thousand conquered worlds, written in countless languages, each caked with the dust of time and a few splattered still with the dried stains of blood that had been spilled to claim them.
She held the torch high, her eyes dancing along a row of ancient books, her mind struggling to decipher the alien languages. How was this place organized? How could she find what she needed? She looked to her left and right down the aisles, seeing the shelves stretching as far as her eyesight could strain into the murky gloom. There seemed to be no end to the collection. Her eyes drifted upwards to the towering heights of the shelves, a sense of wonderment at the knowledge here warring with a growing sense of the impossibility of her task.
"May I assist you?"
The voice hissed from the shadows behind her, as dry as dust, as thin as paper. She spun around, her hand flashing to her side to draw forth the thin venom blade that rode at her hip. She found only darkness behind her, nothing more. The green light danced along the edge of her blade as she turned in a tight circle, peering down the aisles, searching for the speaker.
"Who is there?" She demanded, her voice sounding like it had a waver in it, she snarled as she tried to sound bolder. "I am Draconess Isme Hy'till, of the Kabal of Shrouded Knowledge, show yourself or prepare to know torments undreamed of!"
"Undreamed of?" The papery voice hissed like a bellows slowly deflating. A dry and rasping chuckle. "Such ambition, such ardor. Who is to say what has not been dreamed? I have read so many dreams, so many hopes. What is your hope, small thing?"
"Who are you," she demanded again, stamping her foot. She thought she saw movement to her left and spun to face it, but found only shadows and an ancient shelf, bowing under the weight of the mighty books upon it.
"I am nothing, a simple servant. I am the caretaker here, the librarian, how may I assist you?"
"You know this place?"
"I know it as well as anyone who still draws breath."
"You can find me the book I want?"
"I can find you many things, but what you want, what you need, and what you receive...those things I cannot promise you."
"I need to know how to breach the gates of Archon Vezzintyr's estates." She was being placed in the vanguard of that attack, and she knew that her enemies within the Kabal intended for her to fail, fail and die. But she knew it had been done before, and knew a tale of it was within this library...or so the information broker had promised.
"To breach a gate? To attack a house? To storm forward? The rains of chance fall upon you and you cower from the thunder and feaar the lightning. Yes...yes, I know many stories about storms."
"Not storms, the gate, I need to know how to-"
But she could already here the sound of rustling papers and shuffling feet in the darkness. She set off after them, but soon found her path cluttered and blocked. Books, reams of scroll-work, ancient tablets, even a few dust caked data slates all lay upon the floor. Each of them opened to a story, marked with a small gem, or gleaming with a file already accessed. Isme reached down and picked up the first, reading the story hurriedly.
"This isn't..." she sighed, realizing the caretaker was already long gone amidst the maze of shelves. She found her gaze returning to the words of the book in her hands despite herself.
She began to read.
The Rules Welcome to Secrets of the Hidden Library, a hopefully recurring fiction competition here in The Dark City. The purpose of this competition is to create some works of fiction, have some fun reading them, earn some prizes, and hopefully enjoy it all enough to do it again in the future. Anyone may participate (besides the judges, and they know who they are) The Story
- You will write a story, 350 words or less (but not more, seriously now).
Post the story in the Stories & Art; The Black Library forum here on TDC.
Please also post in this thread with a link to your story - indicating you wish it to be part of the competition.
I would also encourage you to include a notation in the topic title about it being an entry - but I don't consider that a requirement.
The only limitation to what the story is about is that it should feature Dark Eldar - and also utilize the theme word in some manner.
You may use the theme word in any manner you wish, feel free to be creative!
The story should have a title - the title will not count as part of the word count.
The Theme WordSTORM. DeadlineYou may post your story at any time. No stories posted *after* June 8th, 12am, EST will be eligible for judging or prizes. You may edit your story at any time - but any edits after June 8th may leave you disqualified for prize support. JudgingMyself and the other two judges will begin judging the stories on June 8th. There will also be a Reader's Choice award poll put up - where anyone can vote for any story as the 'best' Scoring will be based on a 1-10 scale in the following categories; Use of theme word.1 point = it was just randomly in a sentence and had no meaning within the work. 10 points = highly creative use of word, or meaning behind the word, to advance the story and connect the story to the theme word. Quality of narrative.1 point = I fell asleep trying to read it. 10 points = Really interesting, made me enjoy reading it throughout. Grammar, punctuation, and appearance.1 point = solid block of text, written in l33t sp33k, no punctuation at all. 10 points = Proper use of punctuation, no misspellings could be noticed, all words used correctly, neat paragraphs spaced for readability. PrizesThere will be a prize for 1st, 2nd, and Reader's Choice awards. We will come up with a prize pool consisting of books, models, or other DE related stuff...frankly I'll admit we're going to come up with volunteers from the Mod staff to get you prizes based on which of the volunteer mods are closest to your mailing address If you're in the Continental US I will probably be the mod who will send you prizes and I will offer you a list to choose from - letting 1st, Reader's Choice, and 2nd have choosing preference in that order - other volunteer gift givers will be able to choose their own methods, but considering some of the conversation about gift ideas I do pretty much promise you'll get something cool. Have FunAnyone not having fun will be eligible for banning at any time I look forward to seeing what you can all come up with.

| This sounds like a great idea and indeed a fun competition. Count me in! 350 words isn't much, but in the right hands, it's more than enough. Now, to find the owner of those hands and attach them to myself... | |

| Ooh, first one already! I have to start writing if I want to post mine before the deadline ends The shortness the story needs to have limits the potential, but that was an interesting short read, Mongoose | |

| Woo! I heartily approve of this! It was certainly interesting writing something with such a small word count. You must think carefully to distill great meaning through such brevity. A Dark Eldar writing competition? What could be more depraved!? Here is my entry! http://www.thedarkcity.net/t6439-blight-storm#69915 I hope this humble offering pleases the readers. Also, are we allowed more than one entry? I'm not asking so I can go nuts I promise you, but I do have one more idea pecking at the inside of my skull like a hungry razorwing. Also also, this here made my day. - Siticus the Ancient wrote:

I honestly never even considered this. I have zero issues with you writing multiple stories, but I may make you decide which of them you wish to submit for judging (feel free to ask your audience to weigh in ) At the very least I'm going to enforce a 'one prize per participant' rule, so you're ineligible to win multiple prizes even if I do decide to allow multiple stories to be submitted. I'm open to hearing thoughts from other people about how they think it could/should be handled. Also, I'm excited to see we already have two stories entered

| Agreed with all of the above. 350 words is tough. Here's my shot: http://www.thedarkcity.net/t6513-a-light-against-the-storm#70586
I am also sorely tempted to write another potential entry, but I would definitely support the idea of nominating one entry per contestant for the sake of balance.

For a short story set in a single scene, the word limit actually works surprisingly well! Helps to keep it simple and also trims the fat, as every word should be there for a reason.

I hate "a"'s and "the"'s. Count as 1 word just as much as Kheradruakh is 1 word.

I hadn't really noticed until you mentioned it, but nearly 10% of my word count is "the" and "a". I feel I have failed the dark gods of literature...

| 6 entries are now in.
3 weeks now remain.
Thank you all for the submissions, I'm intentionally not even reading them yet because I want to do it as a single splurge, and also I'd like to read and grade in one fell swoop without reading too many of the comments from other people to affect my initial thoughts, but I'm already excited and curious as to what treasures await me during the judging process.
