| Reading through the 7th ed FAQs I see that the old designation of IC seems to have been lost and now sergeants and captains / special characters are all termed 'characters'.
If that is the case has the soul trap become a must take?

| No. Independent Character is still a subset of Character, but is a special rule that is listed in the model's entry rather than as their unit type. Essentially, everything appropriate has 'character' as their unit type, but some have the 'independent character' rule listed amongst their special rules. Kind of an 'all thumbs are digits but not all digits are thumbs' situation.
Sadly, the Soul Trap entry states that it only works on Independent Characters, not just 'Characters'. So it will work on Calgar/Tigurius/Generic Space Marine Captain #47, but not on Barry the Sergeant.

| Clearly poor Barry is just not important enough for us to steal his soul. Maybe next time Barry | |

| They all have the Independent Character special rule in the codex and so they're played exactly as they always have been. All that's been done is that IC is a rule and not a unit type now. | |

| Everyone should read Panic_Puppets explanation earlier in the thread. Independent Character is a special rule, not a unit type. Character is a unit type. Only unit types are shown in the FAQ, not special rules. | |

| The soul-trap is still handy to have, unless your Archon or Haemonculus is using a venom blade or another close combat weapon with poor AP. However, it's probably wasted points unless you're using its wielder as an assassin. Many ICs worth targeting will have tough guards or similar protection from nearby units - a S6-7 Archon with a decent AP will shred enemies left and right. - Tyrant Lord 73 wrote:

And this is why we can't have nice things, Barry...
