| Do soul traps work if your Archon kills a character in a challenge? I'm talking John Smith the utterly unimportant space marine sergent here. The wording of the codex says no, if I remember correctly (independent character and MC only), but still... It would be totally awesome. Interested to hear you opinion. | |

| IC's and MC's only I'm afraid. Sergeants and other unit leaders will not trigger the soul trap. Incidentally, if you find yourself fighting Tyranids and have a Soul Trap handy, you might want to consider having a bash at any Mycetic Spores that your opponent lands. T4 Monstrous Creature with a 4+ save.

Mein Gott! I have a friend who takes about three mycetic spores! I smell opportunity, if I can deal with the tide of termagants.

| the opposite of tyranids is guard. Considering their CCS and PCS arent ICs, just characters. So the only way for you to get a soul trap off is to kill a primaris psyker, a lord commisar, or yarrick | |

| Hmm, do people on this forum get good use out of them? I've been taking a soul-trap on my archon but I've never had a chance to use it. Might be metagame, but I've never played against MCs, and ICs are hard to come by. Furthermore the ICs I can get my archon into combat with refuse challenges and/or are very tough. | |

| I end up using mine a lot because my two friends have necrons and tyranids, the tyranids having the obvious abundance of MCs and my necron playing friend just loves to tool up his lords and overlords and try to stuff one in each squad with a res orb, stupid non dying necrons. On another note does anyone know if there is definitive reasoning that I could soul-trap something like a necron overlord that came back after I soul-trapped him the first time? The main thing about using the soul trap archon is to make sure you are using him against an army that would or is likely to include a bunch of MCs or ICs | |

| There's nothing in the rules to say that a Necron cannot use Ever-Living to return after the Soul Trap has done its thing. Some might argue that there is a difference between "removed as a casualty" and "killed" but the terms seem to be used interchangably in the rulebook so I'm not persuaded that this is relevant. So if you 'kill' it once and Soul Trap it and it then comes back again there's nothing to stop you from doing it all over again for lovely S10 attacks. | |

| I don't want to necro this thread but I feel all questions about soul-trap should be clumped together.
My question regards to how you kill that IC/MC to trap his soul.
As PfP works in any way you kill of an enemy non-vehicle unit. So I believe this works the same way for the soul-trap. I (hope to) use it when I shoot something with my blast pistol or sweeping advance them in combat.
On the sweeping advance together with a unit my logic is this. Since the Archon does use his high Init. to swipe the unit it is he who picks his kills.
So this is the way I try to use my soul-trap. I was so addicted to that combat drugs dispenser of the old Archons that I take my chance with the ST and CD to gain strength. I hope to see more MC's in my meta since they seem to be a new trend in 6th, besides flyers. Sadly I only get 1 overlord MSS all kitted, from my local Necron player. So my only hope is to sweeping advance him.
Good to know that is isn't a bad idea to let him live on. Since normally I lock him in so he stays dead for good.
Against IG it doesn't work but normally The Archon still kills infantry off just fine.

| sweeping advance and blast pistol will not trigger the soul trap.
also you get a pain token even from the soul trap. so the necron lord can generate multiple tokens. . .yeah idk why it works but it does.
