Hey everyone, I recently lost my hobby desk (long story), and I'm looking for a new one. The original that I had was just an old home study desk, roughly the size of a small kitchen table. If anyone doesn't mind too much, I am just looking for ideas for a new one, and if you have pictures, that would be awesome! Bonus points to anyone who has converted their desks  Razz

I bought a separate table-top from ikea (basically just a large flat board with a plastic coating) and a couple of shelving units. I specifically wanted a desk that I could stand at, so the shelving units are reasonably high ~1m. The table-top is just screwed in place on top of the two shelf units. I forget how much it all cost, but it would have been around £100 (three or four years ago). It's currently covered in all sorts of junk, but when I get a chance to tidy up I'll post a pic to give you an idea.

Slap-together carpentry is so easy, I would always recommend building your own: trawl charity shops(some specialise in furniture), church sales, root through skips, watch out for street-dumped furniture etc.

Decide how high you want your surface: I like about 750mm, which is the height of standard kitchen units without legs, so have a look at Ikea's system, or others, for the base unit(s), legs etc.
Check out timber yards for worktop offcuts: a normal 40mm kitchen worktop is 3metres long, so if someone wants a shorter one, the yard will have cheap remains, easily big enough for a hobby desk.

I recommend a metal office filing cabinet with lots of shallow drawers: mine has 11 60mm deep drawers, which makes rooting for that tool or spare part very easy.

Plan your lighting too: I like one anglepoise magnifier fluorescent, some prefer 2 anglepoises, or poseable spots on shelves above.

Oh, and a dedicated coffee mug spot helps stop you accidentally drinking your paint water!

Don't know if you're still interested, but I tidied up a little (yeah, it's still a mess). This is my work bench.
