Cannonborns behind the Aegis Line? Empty
PostSubject: Cannonborns behind the Aegis Line?   Cannonborns behind the Aegis Line? I_icon_minitimeMon Jun 16 2014, 01:46

Hi Archons, Succubi, and Haemis.

I had a couple of games in the 7th ed environment. Although the vehicles definitely became safer from the explosion in this edition, I feel the cannonborn squad (2SC trueborns,  1SR trueborn, and a venom with 2SC) are still fragile owing to 2HP of the venom. To make matters worse, the squad has the higher risk of pinning as modified in the 7th ed. (That's why some of us started to use the grisly trophies)

I agree with the opinion that a raider is superior to a venom now, but we still need venoms for our trueborns. So I'm considering utilizing the aegis line to solve out this problem. I haven't tried it yet, but will do in near future - maybe this weekend?

The strategy is simple. Turn 1, the cannonborn squads disembark and stand behind the aegis line. Their venoms then freely move, shoot, and occupy objectives if needed. The squads can get 4+ cover save, even 3+ (by nightfighting) or 2+ (by invisibility from the allied psykers) maintaining their full BS. In addition, they can hit most of the enemies with the long range of SC.

The disadvantage would be the big penalty from the blasts and templates.

Any thought?

Templates unfortunately don't discriminate whether we are in a Venom or not this edition so there isn't much protection there. Even though it's D6 wounds, a crappy dice roll of a 2 is too many for this 3 man unit.

I love this unit and I'm running 3 of them in my first detachment. What makes the unit good is being able to move. Movement is so crutial to DE success as being both static and frail do not combine well. Take Grisly Trophies now for the occupants benefit and Haywire grenades for any mech that drives/flyes/lands too close but early game stay at max range for as long as possible.

Actually you will have an advantage from using ADL when some more of your will stay behind it. Not just 3 splinterborns. I'd prefer not to disembark from the Venom because of the mobility. Very often your opponent will stay out of range you shooty units and you can waste one or two turns of shooting as no one in range. Second, the new Maelstorm missions have many tactical objectives when you need to control markers. So mobile splinterborns in a Venom are very convenient choice here.

P.S. You don't need to disembark from your dedicated transport on turn 1. Simply deploy your splinterborns behind ADL and leave their Venom empty.
P.P.S. Invisibility don't give you 2+ cover. The enemy can fire only snap shots at you invisible units. But I'd recommend to cast that power on someone else, who is more important for the game (Beaststar for example)

Yes, I kept considering this idea by myself today, and made a conclusion same to your opinions. It seems obvious that the strategy should be modified further. Thanks to 1++ & SERAFF!

P.S. I meant Shrouding, not Invisibility. My mistake  Embarassed
