| We recently got a buddy into 40k, and he chose Tau. No regrets. He's bought a battleforce, and we're going to have a small 2v2 battle in the near future.
We'll each have a battleforged list of 500pts, for 1000pts a side. Some Nurglite CSM will be there too, and some Astra Millipedes.
A brace of questions for you, then -
It's already agreed that the Tau and my DE are going to be opponents. So which of the other guys do I want to be onside with? My only thought is that getting allied with the Guard stops anybody being worse off than anyone else due to the allies matrix. But that's minor.
Second, obviously importantly, what do I take?? I'm thinking wych heavy, venoms aplenty, plus trusty reavers. Leg it into combat and stay there no matter what while bikes zoom about claiming objs.
Now everybody find a partner and discuss among yourselves: what would YOU do if you were thesaltedwound? Try to feel his panic as it sets in, and write your answers on the quietly screaming whiteboards provided. Don't be afraid to use ALL the different coloured pens now!!

| DE and Astra Militarum make the most sens in the way they can fight.
500 Points is tight. Heres a list that would compliment an Astra Militarum gunline. You can bring your entire force to the forefront.
Haemonculus (Liquifier gun, Webway Portal, Venom Blade)
Haemonculus (Liquifier gun)
6 Mandrakes
7 Mandrakes
3 Wracks
3 Wracks
Venom (Extra Splinter Cannon, Night Shields)
Deploy 3 wracks, 2 haemonculus with Webway and Venom. Reserve the Mandrakes and second Wracks (or infiltrate the Mandrakes if that makes sense to do). Use this mechanism to get your units into position and then attack viciously from the shadows. This should buy the IG guns time to do their grisly work. Your shooting and assaults are actually pretty effective, and Liquifiers are going to really protect you against chargers as well as prove to be excellent assault weapons.

| The question really is do you want a balanced list in its own right, or do you want a balanced list combined with your opponent? Because Dark Eldar suffer VERY badly at smaller point games. You can't get the points for a killy HQ, your troops are paying for transports and coming out at 130 points a squad (ish), and that's before you start taking Ravagers. Unorthodoxy is certainly living up to his name with that list I can see the thinking, but I'd be more comfortable with something a bit more conventional. Not to mention that if you didn't have that stuff already, and that's quite understandable with mandrakes and wracks, it would set you back somewhere in the region of £80 just for your troops and elites. I would agree with your take on it, with wyches in venoms and Reavers (or Ravagers) for anti-tank. Personally, I'd agree with your opponents to disregard the allies matrix. It sees more use as a 1v1 option anyway, and you don't want one side having advantages over the other. Make each warlord in 500 points worth a victory point and give them their own traits that don't affect their allies, exactly as if you were running two totally separate detachments. And don't use the One Eye Open rule. I would be more tempted to ally with Nurgle CSM in most situations, against any opponent. Fearless, toughness 5 troops with poisoned attacks and a 3+ armour save and Feel No Pain makes up for every deficiency Dark Eldar have in the scoring department. | |

| PLOT TWIST We've moved onto 750pts each.
Whoah... I was so not ready for mandrakes to come up! Sadly, I don't own any. We did decide in the end to not go with the allies matrix, but also to randomly determine who gets to fight alongside AM or CSM on the day.
You're right about the difficulties of getting a balanced list. Webway on the haemo makes sense in Unorthodoxy's list, and might also work well in a slightly larger list of more conventional units. SC/LG talos popping out from portal has worked for me in the past.
I'll put some actual list up later today, thanks for the food for thought you guys!

| No MANDRAKES! What are you spending your hard earned cash on anyways? Go get some!
Well if you own none, then we need a new plan. But you never mentioned such a drastic shortcoming in youir collection. Tisk tisk.

| At 750 points I'd say a webway is too expensive. If I were me, I'd build a list tailor made to kill either Tau/CSM or Tau/AM. And what I know of both their infantry generally makes our poison weaponry lackluster. CSM's best troops are cultists and tau are weboo xenos. Depending on how cheesy these lists are I'd say Razorwing Jetfighters are your best course of action. Cultist blobs, IG blobs, and Tau scum weboo blobs will all succumb to a torrent of Monoscythe Missiles.
Edit: Forgot to mention if CSM brings a heldrake it's the only thing that might save you.

Of course, their owning player will lose some friends, but they could do it if they wanted to... Big ol' pie plates could work very nicely too.

| Awesome in concept, unfortunately not in application.
Swarms of dark creatures flying and crawling their way out of a portal. Sounds awesome.
Watching an Archon waste his mobility, and shooting, to drop a portal, then watch him tap his foot as he waits for something to come or not come out, then when something finally does come out it, it stands there like an idiot because assaulting out of it would be unfair.
So I wouldn't buy it with points. On the other hand I would buy the plastic model they came out with.

| It's not like he doesnt have allies!
well anyways, do your thing but I think at those points you can ghet mileage. and in case it hadnt occurred, hes not tapping his foot. He and his mandrakes are blasting into someone with AP 4 pinning weapons from a bush, and keeping the enemy occupied.

| Orth, do you really use mandrakes? I've got to see that in a report one day!! Anway guys, everything has gone pale bits up. I've actually ended up allied with the tau.
I'm going haemo with some fun toys (fun toys are a must for a new gamer) with a haywych squad, raider, another little haywych squad in the other raider, some blasterborn in a venom, 5 bikes with caltrops and a talos.
I'll be popping vehicles and providing distractions while his firewarriors x2, pathfinders x2, pirhana and crises hold onto stuff and waste infantry. Optimised for markerlights, cover use and hopefully nightfighting.
This was NOT what I wanted for tomorrow's game. Hmf. Bright side is that with so much new learning to do I might have time to get enough photos/notes to do my first batrep.

| Like this for example? http://40kunorthodoxy.blogspot.com/2014/07/terror-based-dark-eldar-vs-tyranids.html
Had to fight my worst case scenario: A fearless army, using an army designed to cause fear! Oops. Will I win? CAN I pull it off?
