As dawn broke over the ridge, clouds awash in blood red sunlight drifted over the horizon, as if the bowels of the gods had been sheared open, revealing their innards for the world to see.

Below, the bodies and faces of mortals contorted in raging agony -- their blood and entrails mixing  with the soil, the mud and the rubble of their once proud fortifications. Mingled amid the thundering roar of gunfire and cackling explosions, was the sickening howl of the dying and the maimed . . .
