| I just moved to a new city, and have not met anyone to play 40k with since the new codex came out (at least no-one I want to play with...), though I have a couple friends who are getting into it right now, with mostly marines as choices. We have decided to play as purists.. no allies. so I choose only from the DE list. I mention this because it provides context as to why I keep asking all these newb questions, and what I will be up against.
So: Trueborn. Good?
I have an image in my brain of a Venom or two with Trueborn in them, DS ing in to shooting range of infantry, disembarking, using the SC's on the Venom, as well as gearing them up with anti-infantry weapons.
I would definitely give them two SC's. But I can also equip them with special weapons. I am just not sure I like the options... do I go with blasters, or shredders? Or forego the special weapons and let them use their SR's?
And is this whole tactic viable? I know the vagueries of DS, but if I wasn't into taking chances, I would not have chosen the DE, I suppose.

| The most common options I have seen for trueborn are 4x blasters or 2x splinter cannons. With the change for SC to salvo, them riding in a venom is not as good unless you can sit in one spot.
The thing that makes trueborn good is that they can take multiple special or heavy weapons on small squads. If you are going to stay with splinter rifles, you would save points just using warriors.

\ Fair enough! I suppose the reason for taking the Venoms is to give them DS, and add those extra SC. 4 shots are still pretty decent, it seems to me. I would likely not move them around much after deployment, however, which would make the DS roll pretty important. Maybe just skootch them into cover, if possible, or out of LOS from units that could cause them problems. But with blasters and shredders, I would need them to get in pretty close. (sorry.. just thinking aloud... uh... while typing) I could try to DS them in a bit closer. The blasters would be good vs marines...

| I ment of you were staying with splinter rifles on the trueborn, Warriors would be cheaper. You can take a venom with 2x splinter cannons with either unit. | |

| We can still use splinter cannons on models/troups effectively it will just be trickier because of salvo but the 36 inch range is still nice. Remember though that if the venom jinks the occupants still fire at full ballistic. | |

Oh yeah! I had forgotten that.. thanks! That makes it a little sweeter.. opens up options. So... disembark, and make them effectively footsloggers (which isnt that bad considering range) or keep them on, move em around, but take a chance on jink and flickerfield. I guess that really comes down to situation. Options... gotta love em.

| well i just ran a venom with 4 dark lances in it. the dark lances were destroying anything and everything they shot at while the venom would disintegrate the troops who decided to get to close. It made the venom a damn big target but he could not get his meltas in range due to overwhelming firepower and his rockets and las's were bouncing off the 3 up cover. It was a blast.
A lot of people will say for dark lances is unnecessary but I like to make sure the vehicle i am shooting at dies in one turn. also they are nice for taking out the deep striking termies. 4 dark lances and 24 rerollable shots from a raider made Swiss cheese of his 5 man assault terms. he was not happy lol.

But how did you get them in there? Trueborn can only take 2 heavy weapon selections. That would mean 2 DL at most.

| If you were playing a venom with trueborn and they had 4 dark lances then you made a mistake. Trueborn can only take 2 heavy weapons and 4 may take weapons from the specialist weapons Pg. 78 in the codex. So you can take 3 blasters with your 2 darklances only difference is blasters are 18 inches and are not heavy so you can fire at full ballistic when dismounting or moving. | |
