| Hi guys, with the new arlequins codex I'm thinking on making a good close combat unit for my DE army. I would like to know if it's viable this option and I also would like to make the unit around a Succubus and a Shadowseer ( I would like to play with Psychic phase ). Do you think is just enough to have a Troup with 8 Arlequins with kisses + equiped Succubus + equiped Shadowseer with Phantasmacy, all in a raider?? Another question is if this unit is better than a grotesques unit...
What would you think??? What kind of unit would you do??
PD: Grotesques are so expensive for me to buy so I'm trying to do a good close combat unit with arlequins..

| A good alternative to making GROTS is to use warhammer fantasy kits. I used the Crypt horrors with left over talos bits. The new skaven stormfiends look great as well.
Grots are great for what they do and can grind units down and take punishment.

| I use Fantasy Rat Ogres for my Grotesques. They are cheap are very effective. Throw some Talos bits or extra spikes from Raiders/Venoms youll be ok.
I highly recommend Grotesques though. They take punishment very well and can deal with any Toughness unit in the game. Throw a character with AP 2 in there to help them and let them do some work. They can become Fearless Turn 2 from the Coven Supplement or 5 in the DE book.
I have heard great things about Reavers but have not played them personally.

| Converted Ogryn, Rat Ogres, or Fantasy Ogres can all make good Grots.
I have also used old Confrontation and Dreamblade minis to great success.

| So arlequins are not good for a close combat unit? | |

| Harlequins are ok, but more of a counter assault unit to not dedicated combat units. Grots a better because they can take a beating and fight a larger variety of units | |

| Grots, the pain engine, beast packs, and Reavers are all decent in CC. | |

| A 3 man grot squad without aberration costs 165 points with raider. Two of those are great especially the grotesquerie. But it it a huge advantage if you use them coven style.
Reavers are awesome. 9 reavers, with 3 caltrops and a arena champion( counted as one of the nine) with an agoniser are extremely good at taking out targets. I had a squad take a mauloch with bs2 and ws2.

| The problem with Harlequins is the lack for armor and toughness. The 5++ save is nice but even lasgun fire will hurt and they are so expensive if you give them wargear.

| If you do take grotesques, take them from the Grotesquearie. It's a beast of a formation. Their Latest Experiments rule can really tip the balance for them. Be sure to take the Sump so the Haemonculi can play!
The Corpse Theif Claw is the best close combat unit DE have. It's a monster unit that can survive shooting or assault. It will dominate the game and kill almost anything it touches. I've killed a knight, a gigantic invisible Khorndog unit (that assaulted me!), and a buffed IG blob with it and I've never lost the unit... Plus the VP bump wins games...

Grots are great for what they do and can grind units down and take punishment. Add Warmahorde Warspears to that list.

| I'm going to suggest Reavers with caltrops and no gun upgrades. They are fast, resilient (skilled rider = better jink), hit and run, relatively low point cost, bladevanes can kill most infantry and even some vehicles at rear armor. They can be used in a variety of ways. You can present them to your enemy as bait on turn one to shoot at them while the rest of your army maneuvers around. You can have them turboboost to threaten the flanks. They can fly in from reserve and challenge objectives. They are just so versatile and can fill a lot of different roles depending on how you equip them and where you need to fill gaps in your strategy.
They are available online and in some stores and do not require conversions. The kit also comes with a few extra heads and other bits that you can use on your other models.

| Nobody's suggested Incubi yet? Am I the only player on this forum that actually likes them? Tossing out 2 WS5 attacks, 3 on the charge, each at S4 AP2 is fairly vicious. 5 in a venom has worked for me quite well. Alternatively, 4 with a klaivex and an Archite Glaive succubus is nice... the small size means you're generally outnumbered, meaning that the extra attacks from the missing Incubus are picked up by the Klaivex's bonus attack and Rampage. As long as you aren't a complete prat with your target choice they'll usually win their fight, and you'll probably have FnP by the time they see combat.
The alternative CC unit I run is one of 3 grotesques, depending on upgrades about the same cost as the incubi, and they can either go in a raider or with a WWP, having the toughness to survive shots. These also get run with either a haemy or aforementioned succubus. If you want something to survive longer, take the grots. If you want something to kill faster, take the incubi.
