new gw cases

I can't tell is the new gw cases good or bad for transporting dark eldar in? Are all the hooks, spikes and blades are going to get mauled in foam?

They pretty much always do.

Battlefoam. Expensive, but the only thing that's going to work, unless you make your own.

Feldherr produces some damn fine foam and cases.

New GW cases look pretty good to me.

Think I will buy one and try it. It cheep not to ugly.

I bought my own foam from e-foam, then cut out shapes to suit each model.

From the little of these cases I have seen so far, I think they are pretty darn good. The new-design foam trays especially look to be a terrific solution for many of us, light years ahead of the little rectangular slots that never actually fit any of the models you are trying to carry

I will reserve final judgement until I get my grubby little hands on one, but I am really looking forward to doing that.

I think the new cases will work really great for everything other than raiders and ravagers. Too many pokey bits for something to friction fit into space. I think you will still need a dedicated slot for those things. Maybe venoms too.

Just to follow up on this thread. I ended up picking up the big case last night after seeing a guy carrying a full 2000pt Ravenwing army in the medium one.

The Foam and design is actually REALLY good in how well you can move it and shift it to conform to the shape/fit that you need. It's not like a battlefoam tray where models are loose in their own slots so getting models in and out of foam takes long - but they are held in place better.

Concerning Infantry, no issues with Wracks, Grots, Reavers, Hellions or other infantry models. I was able to easily get 40-50 Warriors/Wyches into a single top tray (comes with a total of 8 of them in the largest case). I found Scourge to fit best by alternating face up under the foam strips and face down on top of them. However my Solarites had to be with the vehicles due to how much the pony-tailed head and the angonizer stick out.

Talos and Cronos I had to put on their side but otherwise no issues.

Flyers (minus stands) I had to not put anything on top of them. So with 2 trays stacking on top of each other in the foam, I ended putting flyers in the bottom with the other half of the tray stack not on top of it. However, I could put the other "double" set of trays on top of it just fine. (hard to explain unless you've seen how the foam trays are sets of 2 trays and there are 4 sets of trays in the large case).

Venoms, Raiders, and Ravagers. - If you are a person that doesn't put any decorative bits, crew, sales, or anything on them, then you'll be ok. Venoms can fit 4-5 in a single-level tray as long as you don't put the trophy poles on it due to their height. You can still have them on and get the venoms in the foam; however, you wont' be able to put another single tray on top of them. Raiders - way too many spiky bits and even if you just have the Shock Prow and Sails on it with no other poles or chains, it becomes a little difficult to get it to fit on it's side. You can get 2 on their side per single tray though if you dont' have the crew and poles on it though. Ravagers fall on the same type of mentality but need to be upright - preventing a tray to be put ontop of it.

These cases can fit a HUGE amount of models and works really well for transporting a number of armies. DE's vehicles aren't so much though. The medium one (or possibly just the small one) would be prefect for Harlequins but DE is just too spiky with their vehicles. What I am doing with it with my DE though will be to use a battlefoam box for the vehicles and put the rest of the army in the medium or large case. I have the large but if I transport JUST the army i'm playing and not the collection then I dont' need the large one.

Hope this helps inform someone who is interested in the cases.

I magnetised EVERYThing and am able to transport 2000+ in a "feldherr" maxi bag. But Its far from optimal. Friends of mine bought plastic boxes with metal trays in there and magnetised their bases which is ideal for tournaments as you have a "tray" and just put things in there. Only a little foam needed. You can build those yourself but there is also a shop where you can buy that already set up for about 70 bucks. I will post a link when i find it again so that you get a better idea. Its not super handy but nearly ideal in my opinion.

Im thinking about picking up at least one of the medium or large ones just to transport Infantry I guess. It obviously works amazing for those and venoms. I'll still have to make my own way to carry raiders and such.

But how to store the vehicles in a metal tray?

I looked at these but I fall into the 'spikes and poles' category so don't want to deal with the anguish.

One thing I DO hope happens with these cases is that GW will allow the foam trays to be purchased individually. They are setup well to keep infantry and such in tightly and can move; however, I could see myself taking the case for my DE in some scenarios if I cut out a couple strips of foam. But w/o the ability to get a replacement beyond purchasing another case, I'm going to have to hold off a bit.

I'm sure it won't be long before another company brings out similar trays.

Wow that's a pretty brutal review.  I can see their points but don't necessarily agree with them after loading up my large case and also seeing a friend load a full 1600pt Ravenwing army into the middle case.  The level of protection depends greatly on the number of minatures you put into the tray due to the nature of the loose zigzag foam.  That said, I have accidentally drop the case down some steps (stupid neighbor's dog caught me off guard) and not a single one of my Orks were damaged.  That said, I would agree to not take it on a plane as there's no lock or truly secure the case.
