I stopped using decals of any kind because under some kinds of light and some angles, the decal's edge and surface sheen were visible. Is there any way around that?

I remember watching a video on miniwargaming, and he recommends something like a finishing layer that "melts" the decal onto the surface (he also notes that decals work better on a gloss coat)
I assume he's referring to something like this

You need to use both decal aplier and varnish afterwards.

You can get it an any regular hobby store. But game stores usually won't carry it.
