Actually, if you never get out of your venoms the -Ld will not affect your corsairs and Grots are Fearless. Maybe Curse of the Void not such a determent then.
Still reading up on new Corsair stuff so if my question is gibberish feel free to ignore
No, not gibberish at all. In fact, I've always ben fond of this quote - “The man who asks a question is a fool for a minute, the man who does not ask is a fool for life.”
My reasons for Malevolents are:
- Fearless. Since my Corsair Prince isn't using Mask of Secrets (hence isn't Fearless himself), I wanted a Fearless squad for him to run with. In addition to the usual stuff, this also helps with his own abilities/powers - since Survivor of the Endless Darkness can cause a pinning test, and Perils of the Warp can either auto-pin the squad or make them pass a Morale test on 3d6 (taking the 2 highest) or fall back.
- S4 on the charge (which is usually slightly better than WS5). Granted, since they have only 1 attack base and Rage, they're worse than Voidstorm if the combat lasts multiple rounds. But, I'm relying on my Prince to do most of the work anyway - they're there more as a meat-shield. And that leads me to...
- 2 wounds apiece and FNP. Obviously this isn't amazing, since they're only T3, but it should still give them a lot more staying power in combat against most infantry, compared to Voidstorm.
- Fluff. With my Corsair Prince being a converted Mandrake, Malevolents seem like a more appropriate escort.
In terms of the -1Ld penalty they impose, it's a bit of a concern but not too much. For a start, I can probably mitigate it by positioning my Malevolent squad on one of the flanks. But, even if it does catch a unit or two, I'm not particularly worried. As you say, my grotesques are basically immune, and my Balestrikes and Cloud Dancers should be nowhere near my Malevolents. That just leaves my Reavers. But, with 5-man squads of T3 infantry with 5+ saves, I doubt they'll even survive to have to make a Ld test. Put it this way - there's a reason I haven't bought Felarchs for any of them.
The one thing that does bug me is that they can't score. Not much I can do about that though, other than detaching the Prince next to an objective on a crucial turn.
All that said, I'll probably give Voidstorm a go in the near future and see if I like them better. I've already written out a fluffier list with 2 Barons leading Voidstorm squads, alongside my Prince. So we'll see.
Apropos of nothing, but I think I'll try and fit a Void Dreamer into this list to join one of the Grot squads - the possibility of jumping them into combat on turn 1 could be very useful indeed.
