PostSubject: Return to 40k/dark eldar   Return to 40k/dark eldar I_icon_minitimeMon Oct 03 2011, 10:19

Hey all, 25 yr old just dusting off my old paints and models. Started playing GW games at around 13, 40k to start with eventually leading to just about every GW game system which existed at the time. Was heavily involved untill the age of 17 or so when i found other interests. About a year ago i dug out some models, picked up some fresh paints and brushes and painted up a couple of figures but due to limited space in a share house the hobby table eventually got packed up and forgotten about untill now.

While I was heavily involved as a teenager and bought a looooooot of models, I have never completed even a small well thought out coherant-looking army which I would very much like to do. The closest I ever got was my dark eldar force which was put together and painted in my later teenage years once I had the benefit of some experience in both painting/modelling and putting together an army.

I want to aim for 1000 points as a short-mid term goal but before I start investing my time in painting up more figures I want to ensure I am going to end up with a somewhat competitive force. The edition of 40k i am familiar with is 4th i beleive (boxed set came with dark eldar plastics+space marines with landspeeder). I have picked up the new dark eldar codex and the game seems much the same as it was but I am sure there have been subtle changes that will be relevent to me when choosing an army list. eg vehicle rules for moving and shooting/disembarking, the "feel no pain", "furious charge" and "fearless" rules, fleet rule (i assume same as fleet as foot from 4th ed). I vaguelly recall there being a white dwarf article regarding upcoming changes to shooting/assualt phase too which would have a dramatic effect on Deldar playstyle. (used to move 12 in raider, disembark 2, fof or shoot depending, then assault). Now i will prob pick up the new rulebook soon but any major changes would be nice to know about now so i can keep them in mind.

This is what I currently have painted up:
37 warriors total including 3 sybarites, 4 splinter cannons, 2 dark lances and 2 blasters
1 Archon w/3 incubi
1 Talos
1 Raider + another one half painted
2 Hellions
1 Scourge
Beastmaster+two beasts

Unpainted I have at least another 15 warriors, a ravager, 7 metal wyches, couple of scourges and hellions.

Probably the best thing i can do is put together a small 6-800 point force (painted or not) for a couple games and re-learn the rules and dark eldar units before deciding what i want in my 1000 point project. I have had a look at some of the armylists and tactics on this board but would appreciate any feedback about what Ive got to work with and how I should proceed.

Couple pics taken on my phone...some of the models are very dusty haha.

Scourge was painted more recently than the rest...a yr or so ago maybe? Its the only DE highlighted that far up and while im happy with the effect i think it looks waaay too bright and will probably never be used in the army itself.

Most everythin else pictured has only one level of hightlights and of of shading (blacklining even) which was the intention when i began this army...Other than perhaps a new HQ model I will stick to that for the remainder of the army to maintain consistancy as well as make this project achievable.

Welcome to The Dark City, it's nice to hear that you are back in the game.

You have chosen well, the new Dark Eldar codex is by far the best codex to have been written in several years, both in terms of fluff and coherency.

We have some excellent sections on Tactica and Army List building, you would be best to post your questions there so that you would get much more traffic and responses.

I'm no expert on 5th edition, I played maybe 5-6 games in 4th before the change, but here's some links to some summaries of the key differences. We are also due to get 6th edition sometime next year.

And finally, you can't post pics until you have at least 10 posts under your belt, so they are not showing up. I will re-post them here for you until you have enough posts, and then I will remove these duplicates.

I hope that you enjoy it here! Cheers.
