So ive painted some models i got off ebay in a couple different color schemes. The freehand is awful, please ignore it and the paint was slopped on literarly just so i could see what the color schemes look like. With that being said. What do you think?

I like the bone coloured one (but not the brown seat).
I think that it'll contrast nicely with the red free hand designs.

It's a bad camera. The seat is a bronze metalic color. Thanks for the feedback. I think a bone color scheme will go really well with the coven units i'll be getting.

Just finished up my first kabalite warrior. Also my first model i've ever painted for 40k. I think it came out alright. I don't have a good camera but you can clearly see which scheme i choose to use. Feedback, comments, criticism would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

The arms aren't attached as i can't find an angle I like them at and its already 1 a.m. It looks like he has a black dot on his head, thats a part of the symbol on the helmet that cast a shadow when my camera flash went off. Not sure what the black dot on his leg is from but thats not on the model either XD

I like the bone and the bright blue the best the red works best with those colours.

The ice blue works well as a cold color with the red being a nice accent. I think Dark eldar in general need cool colors with bright accents, like poisonous animals, dark and brights all in one

I think it's wonderful. I'm really loving the colors. The ice blue and red are lovely and the green is a nice take away. I'll eagerly wait for the project log!

Sure.

Thin your paints with a bit of water, they say "2 percent milk" for consistency, but work with what feels natural for you but also goes on thin enough to put multiple coats, it will keep the models crisp and detail sharp without getting the model clogged up.

Make sure, when using washes, that you watch so it doesn't make puddles otherwise you're going to have "pools" drying on your model that will look unsightly. While they dry, check on them and use your brush to push some of the pools in other directions.

Practice practice practice! Even if your first results aren't good, keep at it, keep trying to do better, you'll get there! You're first attempts are better than mine were and I've come a long ways since then so that means you can too!

I'd also add when using bright colours thin your shades a lot as they tend to pool and stain making your model appear dirty. Some like that effect and its a good one if your doing things like flayed skin (a must in haemonculus fashion) but on armour it ruins the smoothness.

When painting kabalites how do you get the highlight lines on the armour chestplates. I cannot find a brush small enough to even get a line that thin in there but gw found a way, Is there a technique i am missing?

I think to get the best results is that you only put paint on the side of the brush and you simply run it along the side of the edge, that way the dry paintless point is touching the base but the side is running along the edge, highlighting it.

Oooh. Smart. I should've been able to figure that out. About to test it on some trash models

I had this trouble when I first started, I hold the model diagnollaly and then very gently run the tip of the brush across the edges and I do them in short sharp lines not all at once.

If your worried about the size of your brush as they age they lose bristles so they'll become thinner with time. Art stores also sell some thinner brushes. I have one which is so thin I actually use it for the sole purpose of doing eyes.

Take a look at these vids regarding brush choice.
https://youtu.be/eACqcAQdw2U
https://youtu.be/jyiIoy6oIcw

I use the Winsor & Newton Series 7 Kolinsky Sable Brush, Size 000 and 0. ( way to fancy for me, but I can't go back now...)
I would also recommend getting the brush cleaner he mentions.
Make sure you have good working lights. I use a regular desk lamp from IKEA with a 1000 lumen LED bulb.
This will cost a fair bit, but it will allow you to focus on developing your technique without having to waste brain power compensating for bad equipment.

Of course all of that is wasted if you don't thin your paints. Wink

Im about to pick up a box of scourges and the new start collecting box and since you guys have given great feedback so far i figure id ask some questions here instead of making a new thread.

What are typical colors used in DE skin that arent the ones gw recomends? I dont think the pale purple will work that well with my scheme so far but im botbsure what else would look DEish.

For the wings on scourges i was thinking of doing a more neony (not a real word) blue but all the neon ive seem done on DE looks tacky. Are there any goos ways to do the wings and not have them be typical DE?

Soooo...

I like the pale skin range from Vallejo model Air, that works pretty well!

Also, for the wings...you could paint them a dark blue then drybrush a light blue, like the edges are glowing?
