I am getting ready to repaint some old Eldar jetbikes and noticed that they have the old larger flying stands. Now all Eldar jetbikes come with the smaller flying stands. I know that it is legal to run them either way, but I am wondering: What are the game advantages to using either the larger or smaller bases? Obviously you would be able to make less use of cover with the larger bases, though you would be less vulnerable to blast markers. What else am I missing? Should I update them with the smaller flying bases or 40mm rounds?

Woosh, let's see if we can hit this all;

Larger bases are better for;
Assaulting units (especially those getting out of transports)
Protection from templates and blasts.
Blocking off or conga lining with the models.

Smaller bases are better for;
Hiding behind cover.
Fitting within terrain.

So, basic short answer is that Large bases favor assault units and also favor units likely to want to block/speedbump for you. Smaller bases are better for units you'd like to avoid being shot at and for units that will want to hide in terrain.

A *very* simplistic breakdown is that assault favors large bases and defensive snipers favor small bases.
The best way to 'base for advantage' would be to figure out the role of your unit (I would tend to make Jetlock's large bases since they are assault/tarpit/blocking/survival units and I would tend to make Guardians small bases since they are built to be minimized and sneak in, hide, and snag objectives)

Hope that helps.

^Exactly what I was looking for. I'm putting together Guardians and really was having doubts about the large bases. Thanks Thor.
